Hi fellow myopes:

So today I went to the optometrist, to get my eyes checked, for the first time in four years. Previous, my prescription was:

Sphere: -1.75 for right, and -1.25 for left.

In addition, for my left eye, my cylinder was -0.50, with an axis of 0.50

My right eye had nothing.

Now, I have been using 2.50 + reading lenses for the last month, but for the holidays, I\ve used them ALOT so far, eading, in most of my free time.I went to a new optometrist today, and got the reading:

Sphere: -2.75, for left, and -2.50 for right, and my cylinder and axis are now clear for both eyes(there are blank spots on the prescription).

So bascially, has anyone undergone this method, trying to improve eyesight with + reading lenses?

Basically, BOTH OF MY PARENTS ARE MYOPES TOO, SO genetics are against me(caps used to point this out).

Have the reading glasses helped me? Was I, perhaps, at -3.00 for both eyes, and they improved a bit, to today?

Am I hopeless, because genetics are against me? Plz. help, anyoneP.S., I have tons of time during the holidays, and I'll do ANYTHING, no matter how much time.

Any reason (other than cost) that you don't get Lasik done? I believe it's relatively inexpensive currently - and it far outweighs the cost of glasses/contacts over a lifetime... not to mention the benefits of having "normal" eyes. I don't wear either, but I can imagine what an inconvenience it must be...

Wow that's weird, not too long ago I was reading this: Don Juan Discussion Forum - Better Eyesight Without Glasses

And I PMed blackbirdbeatle for the specific exercise using plus lenses, and this is what he said:
put the glasses on and hold anything with crisp text on it(a book, essay, etc..) up to your face at eye level(Looking across to the book not down as if you were studying). Now there will be a zone where the text will be clear. If you move it too close to your face the text will become blurry and if you move it too far away it will become blurry. YOu want to have the book in the zone so that the text barely becomes blurry when you hold it far away from your face, not up close. Now just when you get to that point where it is just barely blurry(barely as in fractions of an inch), you close your eyes and stretch them or in otherwords look in all directions and roll your eyes but keeping them closed.

Now open them for a few seconds and the text will start to become more clear. Repeat until it is crystal clear than move the book a fraction of an inch farther until it barely is blurry again. Repeat until you can clearly see the text at arms length and then either get stronger glasses and repeat the whole thing or find a way to prop the book on something and move yourself farther away, not your arms.

Start small like 10min a day for 5 days and take 2 days off and gradually add 10 min each week until you are doing it for 1h each day 5 days a week(You can do it longer than 1h too). Once you can clearly see the text at arms length using +3.00 diopter glasses you should have 20/20 vision. Now you can improve even better than this. I'm currently at 18/20 but it will take a long time for your eyes to improve past 20/20, whereas getting to 20/20 wil be quick and the worse your eyes are, the faster you will progress.

Most people can slow down or stop their eyes from becoming more myopic (nearsighted or shortsighted). Stronger glasses each year should not be normal. There is no cure, but you can most likely improve how your eyes are changing.
