So you are saying open a bottle of red and let the thing sit a few days like that just without the cork

in what way does it improve after a few days of being left open?

Yeah or just drink the wine over like three days and see how it tastes over those days. If you drink it straight after opening its gonna have more of an alcohol taste but some of that will evaporate over time and also the tastes will mellow a bit. You can also drink it diluted with sparking water and a sweetener like organic honey to make a cool drink and impress people or with water and cocao to make a hot chocolate its pretty good.

Another way to age wine in the old days was gentle heating which you can also try but it can deteriotate the wine quickly, this is where just leaving it after opening is closer to traditional aging where it is kept closed. But even then it should be drank after good aerating which is what they do when they swirl the wine in the big glass.
