One of the perks on working a dead end, low paying desk job with a lot of down time, is being able to do your homework, read, and or invest in your mind. Most people just sit around bug eyed or shooting the sh!t. There is nothing wrong with doing something worthwhile during downtime, so long as your employer doesn't mind. And an employer who minds is a sh!tty nazi employer.

When I was in high school and college, I purposely sought out hotel front desk jobs, because of that exact perk.

Dude, I've learned how to reduce my work time to 50%. So I'm effectively doing 4 hours of work or less in my 8-hour shift. I use my free time to trade options and stocks using my work's computer. On an average month I make $1,500 on my investments, and this is besides what I get paid at work! I figure they're making about $5 from me for every $1 they pay me, so its not like they're losing anything. Everybody's happy.

I have one of those low-paying, dead end desk jobs. I literally scan files all day. It was very boring at first, but then I started reading internet blogs during the day. I will just glance up and read a sentence here or there. My boss knows about it. She told me in the interview that this job would be tedious, and I think she just wants us to be happy. My productivity is high and she said I'm a hard worker, so I think it is ok for this situation. I would rather have a more challenging position, but if this is what they're going to give me then at least I should be able to read a little! :)

I've been mulling this over, and this hit me like a ton of bricks . .

'the f*ck am I doing asking for ethics advice on a forum where cheating is a debatable topic?
