I said in a recent post that we should expect to hear a lot about how Hillary won the popular vote, so as to try to deny Trump the ability to claim a mandate. Well, it's started already. Tonight on CNN, I heard a woman talk about the electoral college being racist.
There are a few rationales for this:
The first argument is that in the more populated states, people get less electoral votes per person than they do in the less populated states. The reason some say it is racist is because the more heavily populated states have more urban areas, where there are more minorities. Meanwhile, the less populated states are more rural in nature, and thus are mostly white. Therefore, the argument states that this gives whites more voting power than minorities.
The other argument is that in the days of slavery, they allowed slaves to count as 3/5 of a person even though they could not vote. This allowed the southern states to claim higher populations and thus be allotted more electoral votes. Therefore, the argument states, the electoral college played a part in giving more voting power to pro-slavery states.

The main argument in favor of the electoral college is that it prevents the big cities from dictating policy to the states where the population is more spread out. The electoral college also made tallying the election results easier in a time when it took much longer to add up each individual vote.
I've heard arguments for and against abolishing the electoral vote in this country ever since I was born. I don't really have a strong opinion either way. But I can't help but be amused by the typical leftist tactic of labeling it racist to try to stir up support for them. We also know that we wouldn't be hearing any of these arguments if Hillary had won the election.
