i used to have very dry skin on my face, especially on my eyebrows, and cheeks.
i recently stopped washing my face with soap or cleansers...which is something i used to do every night.
now, of course everyone's face and skin are different, but i used to have moderate blemishes, acne whatnot. now, i just watch myself and do not eat very fatty foods etc, and only wash my face with soap when i take a shower.
what i do is, take one of those small towels and in the shower, soak it with hot water, and lather it with that really soft green ivory soap bar (
http://www.ivory.com/YourIvoryProducts_ClassicIvoryBarSoap_Aloe.htm), it has aloe. then i take that lathered towel, and put it on my face and just let the hot shower water seep through, for about a minute, and then just rinse.
another thing i would suggest, is do not touch your face at all during the day. i have noticed that when i've touched my face, or made out with a girl and she puts her hands on my face, the next few days i notice pimples forming in those areas. well, inevitably girls will put their hands on my face, so i can't help that, but i as long as you don't touch your face yourself, it definitely minimizes the dirt that gets under your pores, etc.
not only is my skin moist/soft and not dry, but i've never had cleaner skin since. i still get a pimple every once a month maybe, but a lot less than ever.
and when i do get something, i dab a little tiny bit of toothpaste on it at night (only once every other night depending on how long it's there...again, you don't want to dry out your skin or leave scars). this helps a lot, and they usually clear up fast.
i know your question wasn't directly about clean skin, but i think it's relevant. oh, and i also use an electric shaver, and literally cover my face in aloe vera moisterizing lotion when i get out of the shower. then i wipe my face dry of any lotion residue and it stays nice and non-dry until the next morning. btw, another tip is, instead of using aftershave, using dry skin lotion. it's funny that nivea has just started a similar idea, but it's been a home-remedy for years, and actually i think any guy who wants to keep their skin looking young should do this. my dad is around 60, he's done this, and people think he's like in his late 30s.
Scr: the dry hand thing i also have sometimes during the winter, but that, as i've heard is something completely different, and actually caused by a bacteria. you need a special lotion to get rid of that...see a skin doctor.
