The first thing to keep in mind is not to go buying a bunch of random stuff. Make sure you have the neccesaties, obviously, but hold off on certain things until you get there where you'll be more in tune with specifics you'll need. (Such as ethernet cables, wall stickies, etc.)

Another thing to keep in mind is flexibility. I assume you will have roommate because you will be a freshman. Most dorm rooms are small so don't think you'll be able to lug your whole room with you without some space-management problems.

Speaking of space-management; stackable cabinets and bunking your beds will do wonders for space. If you can contact your future roommate, work out who is bringing the t.v., fridge, etc.

I know, I'm amazing.

^ No, most dormrooms have bunkable beds to save space. And don't bring everything. Do you really want to have 2 tvs and 2 fridges?
