The couple fell in love in high school, even going to senior prom together, but soon went their separate ways.

I've definitely noticed this trend in my social circle - of men dating (if only a first date) a gal many years ago, and only being now when she wants to actually stay with him, and eventually getting married.

I haven't seen this. In celebrity world, Heather Locklear (born 1961) has done this with her high school boyfriend. She got back together with him somewhere in her 50s and well past her prime.
