Either pub or club, general night time activity. Do you buy them drinks? What sort of message do you think that sends?

Will you open by offering them a drink? Or suggest that after a while? Or if you're just waiting to be served and there's a HB next to you waiting, will you offer then?

I personally don't buy girls drinks because I don't think it marks you out as special, and it probably indicates that you're trying hard, unless you can pull off some sort of "I got this for my friend but he seems to have disappeared blah blah..." thing.

One of my guy friends always does - buys at least one girl a drink every time we go out - and insists it marks him out as a "provider" type. But in reality does £3-5 really make a provider? Not in my eyes...

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

I never opened by offering drinks.

I only offer a girl her a drink AFTER we've been talking and/or dancing for a while. In a sense, she's earned it by then. It's clear she's interested in me.

I never want someone to feel obligated to chat with me because I bought her drink. So I test her interest level FIRST. I want to see if she's worth spending any money on.

I don't buy drinks for girls. The only thing I'll buy is a VERY strong shot. It helps me speed up the process, spend less time on game and lower her doubts/inhibitions. She becomes easier to lead and easier to separate from her friends, etc.

Usually I try to avoid buying anything. But if I think a "showing of generosity" is all I need to tip her over the edge.. then its worth it.

The shot I usually buy is so strong that I never buy it for myself. It knocks you on your ass unless you have amazing tolerance. The best part is the shot tastes good so girls ask for another one not realizing how strong it is (I NEVER buy another one). I had one girl begging me for another shot one time, but I knew she would pass out if she got it. Just made out with her instead and took her home.

Again.. I only buy shots for girls I'm 90% sure I can bang to speed up the process.

If I'm going to spend money on a girl, it needs to be worth it.

This

I've never opened a girl by buying her a drink. If we are hitting it off and I see some potential, then I'll buy her a couple. It helps lower her inhibitions.

I don't buy girls drinks, personal preference, I have done it before and nothing.

Recently I met a girl at the bar, I got served first so told her I'd order her hers, she thanked me, then got all shocked when I asked her for the money. She waited for me while I paid, then introduced me to her friends, all the time calling me a ****/arsehole etc. Made out with her later, even though she was adamant I should have bought her a drink.

Girls I know are forever telling me that I should buy girls drinks on nights out, but I cant be arsed to spend money on a girl when I'm out with people. The only girls who get drinks bought are friends, on their birthday/special occasion. I never buy girls I just met drinks.

Yes, this is the way to do it. If you start out by never buying her a drink you show yourself to be desperate, and it is awkward since it feels for both of you like she would be obligated to talk to you. It is a far better feeling for both that you buy it after you have already started talking. Then it feels like progress. It also fits into what both men and women imagine is part of the flirting process, so then she will feel that you are now in that process and get that mindset.

I buy drinks for both guys and girls because I like to be generous. I don't expect anything in return but it usually comes back to me ten-fold. The minute you buy a drink because you expect something in return i.e. chick to talk to you, sleep with you, like you, etc. you are coming from the wrong headspace. Give-to-give rather than give-to-get. Two different vibes completely. One outcome independent, the other outcome dependent.

I never buy drinks for strangers or girls I've just met, If I know them already prior to club environment than I might buy a shot or two. I'll usually buy my friends drinks sometimes too, but I don't expect anything in return.

This sounds a little over the top.

True drinks will lower a girls inhibitions. But feeding them drinks where as they don't no what they're drinking or what it's going to do to them is not something I would suggest. The next level would be giving them a shot full of roofies.

I like what Mike said. Don't offer a drink up too soon, or you'll come across as a desperate chump. Especially with the hot ones. If you're friends with any of them ask them about it. Most of them love going to bars full well knowing that guys will be offering to buy them drinks all night. With these type, they will usually buy you a drink if you're someone they want to keep around.

Don't be a white knight. Its just alcohol. There is no deception involved.

As adults, they are responsible for what they drink. Its coming from a bartender not a plastic bag in my pocket.

Men are always so quick to act as protectors of women. Women they don't even know.

They are not kids bro. I buy this shot for my male friends too. Chill out.

There are too many responses here. I could take your statement apart and write a 1000 word synopsis, but I don't have the energy right now. Saving it for my golf game later. Trying to get under 100 for the first time. Think I can do it.

I'll sum it up:
If you're only giving her one shot then I guess it's not that big of a deal, but you should still tell her: "it's a stronger shot than normal." That way it's her decision. Willing to bet 9 times out of 10 she'd still take it, to prove that she can do it.

Also, that white knight card needs to be used sparingly.

The dude who says he does it in the middle of conversation got it right.

Don't do it in order to strike up a conversation. Girls will flirt just to get drunk. They will proudly admit this. But if the conversation is good it is good MANners to buy the girl a drink. That's how it's always been done. It's what guys do.

To NEVER buy them drinks actually screams "try hard." Or poor. Or awkward. None of which is a good look.

Here's the protocol I like to follow of when to buy:

- While you're talking to them for a while, throw in something like.."yak yak blah blah, so whatcha drinkin? I'm gettin a beer "... and you get one for you, one for her.

- While in a social group. You get everyone at the table a round, including the new girl(s). Makes you look friendly, leader-like, and someone who can keep the night rollin along.

- While on a date. This one is self explanatory.

Any other time, nope.
