Digital Camera?

I am going to college starting in September and I am buying a digital camera before I go. I am looking to spend somewhere around $300, and my goal is a good quality camera that is not too big (so I can carry it around with me relatively easily).

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a camera? I don't really know too much about the different types of digital cameras, but I do understand the basics so some recommendations would be grealy appreciated.
