A lot of Quebecois choose not to get married but are entitled to file joint taxes if they cohabit. Under this law, neither person is obligated to support the other in the event that they separate.

Now a lady who separated from a billionaire feels that she is entitled to $50 million and $56k per month in addition to the $411,000 she already receives in child support.

It sounds like all one needs to do is to not check the married box for taxes to stay single - IOW, one gets legally married by checking that box!
