One area where I'm severely lacking is dancing and I need to learn. I am musically inclined; I play a mean guitar if I may say so myself
I play in a band and I'm well-studied in music. I can express myself musically by playing it, but I suck at dancing to it. I'll get up on stage, I'll sing, I'll rock out, I love to show off my skills when I play solos.
But when it comes to dancing, I get very self conscious and I feel super awkward.
The other day I went to a theme party. At the beginning they played tango. Before the dance, a friend of mine showed me the moves. I was good at that because it's just a structured set of moves. The ladies were just lining up to dance with me. For the first hour or so of the party, I was a big hit.
But then they started playing rap etc. That's when I started to fade out. It doesn't help that I listen to mostly rock/blues, jazz and classical, so I'm not very well-versed about that kind of music. But like it or not, that's the kind of music that gets played these days, so I have to know how to dance to it.
Basically, the only way I know how to dance to hip hop is to grind up on a girl and use her like a humping pole. That's alright when you're dancing with girls you've never met before. But it's weird when you're with chicks you know and chicks you'll see around.
Anywhere I can get tips on how I can get better at this kind of dancing? I know it can be a very powerful pickup tool if used right. However, I feel that I'm either too shy (I'll dance far away from the chick and do the AFC 2-step dance) or I move in too close and get overly aggressive (grinding right up on her).
How do you find the right balance of not being overly sexual early on and then eventually stepping it up to full on grinding?
