Children of wealthy people generally become wealthy. People who become celebrities generally mold to the celebrity persona. Speakers of one language generally learn another language when immersed in the nation it is home to.
In general, people adapt to their surroundings. However, although people generally have the ability to determine that surrounding, most do not.
Proactivity is key to accomplishing goals. Without action, there can be no reaction. To wait around for the right action to occur, when one can simply reach out and turn the key, is inefficient and will result in unsatisfactory results.
You probably cannot gain 150 pounds of muscle without working out. You probably cannot get a number without approaching. You cannot get the job without going to the interview. These examples are obvious and composed of common sense, but there are other scenarious that aren't in plain sight.
Every day each of us makes choices. We chose to get out of bed, we choose to go to school/work, we chose to eat, etc. We often choose who we talk to, we choose what actions we take. But for many, those choices are not within scenarios created by the individual.
An important aspect of daily life is that each person has the opportunity to create the situation in which they are forced to make decisions. To do so is what seperates those who accomplish goals from those who rely on luck and/or have no goals.
For example, it is a man's choice to initiate conversation with people he passes by throughout the day. If his goal is to become more socially adept, then he should not wait for others to start the conversation. If he does, he hasn't lived up to the idea that he has a goal towards which he is striving.
It is the responsibility of the individual to put his goal in front of him and create situations that put him one step closer to it. When you create the situation and interact in that environment, you will adapt to fit it. This is why practice does make perfect. But do not practice what the world makes for you, practice what you make for yourself. The common misconception is that if you let things happen and make decisions based on what your goals/beliefs coincide with, you will achieve them. The part that is left out is the idea that if you do wait around for things to happen, it takes much longer and it is much more painful to make progress.
