My computer is acting really weird. I keep getting this "Antivirus XP" download thing popping up on my computer...it forces me to download its software. The only way i can get rid of it is when i control+alt+delete.

It keeps on changing my background wallpaper to this "Warning" ad saying my computer is affected and i have to download its software. Everytime i try to search for something on Yahoo or Google and i click on a direct link it forwards me to some other site and wont go to my desired site. For example, if i try to search sosuave, and then click on the link it sends me to another site.

I tried to do a virus scan with my Norton anti virus...it will only scan about 8000 files and then say stop and say full scan is complete...WTH??

I tried to remove it using my antispyware software. It removed a whole bunch of cookies but that was it. Even now...i cant even listen to a full song on imeem without it skipping songs after about 30 seconds. Every time i try to download something...it'll download only 1 mb and say its finished.

Anyone know whats wrong and how i can fix it???? :nervous:

You're definately infected.

I tried to do a virus scan with my Norton anti virus...
Why, oh why do people insist on using that hunk of 5hit? Try getting AVG.

A lot of people recomment Spybot for finding where the problems in the registry are. However I've used it and not been successful. You can try using Ad-Aware which is also free.

In worst case scenarios, you'll need to re-format and re-install.

It's very common (ie. well documented if you do a Google search).

http://www.precisesecurity.com/blogs/2008/06/26/antivirus-xp-2008/

Should work.

Edit. To prevent this from happening again, as the previous poster mentionned, just download at least 1 anti-virus (AVG, Avast) and 1 anti-spyware (Spybot, Ad-Aware, superantispyware). They're all free, and they all work great.

Seconded. Norton is sh!t. It takes over your computer and it doesn't even find viruses.

Get AVG instead. It's free too.

I tried the first link. I dont know the process file so i just used the regular CTRL+ALT+DLT and closed the program. The second link doesnt work. The third i tried downloading the program but i think the "Anti Virus XP" program blocked it so it wont let me download the full file as i mentioned before...help? :nervous:

reboot in safe mode, and try to download the software again

2nd link should work, though (at least, many people have managed to get rid of it that way).

i've heard people have also managed to delete it with superantispyware, so you might want to try that.

if everything fails, just google "Antivirus XP". there are litteraly hundreds of guides like the one i posted

here's another one

Just install Linux already and you won't have to worry about that 5hit.

Its worse than a virus, and its slow as a drunk hobo.

I think the OP has malware/spyware. Someone installed a free "antivirus" program.
Here's more info about this pest: http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-antivirus-xp.html

Antivirus XP is a new rogue anti-spyware program - a fake spyware remover, which uses trojans, such as Zlob or Vundo, to enter the system. This parasite is a clone of Antivirus 2008, which has been very popular recently - this is more than evident when you count all the clones Antivirus 2008 has produced over the past few weeks.

Antivirus XP uses popups and fake system notifications as a means to intimidate the user by leading him to believe he is infected. This is usually false information, but this method is used to create a reason for the user to buy an antispyware program (to be more precise - Antivirus XP).

Antivirus XP is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block it's homepage using your HOSTS file.

Use spybot search & destroy, as well as adaware free edition and see what comes up.

Adaware: http://lavasoft.com/
Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Disable Antivirus XP from running through the taskmanager and msconfig to avoid interfering with Spybot and AdAware scans.

Fvck...it wont even let me download the program in safe mode. In Firefox it says it has encountered a error and has to close. In Inter Explorer it wont download and whole thing and says file is corrupt. Please download again, and then says theres an error and IE has to close.

Ok...

Here's what you do:

1. Get on a different computer.
2. Download UBCD4Win: http://www.ubcd4win.com/ and burn it to a CD.
This is a windows pre-install environment. It will load a windows-like shell that has a bunch of tools. A few of which are anti-virus & anti-spyware. This runs off the CD, you do not need a working OS to use it.
3. Make sure your BIOS settings are set to boot off a CD. Run the UBCD4Win and use the anti-spyware tools.

Done.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

The last time I had a piece of spyware like that, I was completely unsuccessful removing it. I had to do a re-format.

You can also try running Hijackthis to kill it. Goto Start -> Run -> type Hijackthis (I think XP comes with it installed by default). The malware may prevent it from running, as it did in my case.

You could also try the Trinity Rescue Kit which lets you run antivirus software without running Windows:

Here's what to do

Hit Windows + R to open up the run window

type in msconfig

Click on the Services tab

Click the check box to hide all windows services.

Disable everything you don't recognize.

do the same thing with startup, disable everything that you don't recognize but don't turn of any Microsoft ones, unless you know you don't want them.

Go to this link http://www.download.com/Antivirus-Firewall-Spyware/
and download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, Ad-Aware 2008 and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Install each of them and do a scan. I'd run AVG last as it takes the longest to scan.

You should be fine when you're done with all 3.

OK, i downloaded the newest AVG and it removed 15 out of 17 infections. The other 2 programs it couldnt removed so i uninstalled 1 of the programs that were infected completely.

I think its still there because it still redirects me to other sites when i click on the links i googled.

What now??

Peace.

When I get virus, which don't happen often, I reinstall the whole operating system. Reformat, reinstall. The fresher the better. I wouldn't be able to use my computer if antivirus fixed the viruses. I don't like it that way. I'm an IT tech.

For my customer I run antivirus and let it remove stuff, because it's fast and easy.

My advice, if you have time and know how, reinstall the whole thing. Takes usually 2 days to do it. But benefits well worth it.

Yeah but that means i have to burn all my files on dvd and that would take forever.

Now its not allowing me to download anything. This is great. Websites arent working right, i cant download anything, and sometimes i cant even scroll down to see a whole webpage without it cutting off.
