Well, usually what I do is cold approach chicks, then as I get to know them, I try to work my way into their social circle. It's a very good method that I'm good at using. But I've been slacking as of late.

Both.

Cold approaching just challenges you in almost every way. This is great for improvement. You overcome your fear, better charisma, abundance mentality, and get used to rejection. As long as you stay positive, cold approaching will do far more good than harm. Rejection is always better than regret.

Social circle game speaks for itselfs, friends are always good to have for access to pretty much everything in life including women. If you know a lot of people, life will become easier.
