Clothes help - picking a nice winter jacket

Hey, can anyone help me with choosing a good looking winter coat?

Right now I just have a snowboarding type jacket thats way too bulky looking. I want something alot nicer, something that will get me some compliments would be cool

I'm still trying to figure out my own style. I usually just sport skate shoes, with a t-shirt and jeans(boring). So I'm looking to change my style up with some better things.


Anyone got any advice on where to shop for some nice stuff or maybe you could give me some good examples?

I don't mean to be rude... but why don't you go and ask the sales women at stores about this same thing? Or maybe take out a woman with this reason (not excuse).

With the coat, the style isn't as important as the brand. Go with a highend/exspensive brand and you can't go wrong. They're always more comfortable anyway.

Buying the most expensive brand is NOT going to make you look any better than a cheap one that compliments your style well. First and foremost, if you don't have a lot of money, buy a coat that goes with a majority of your clothes. A Black or Tan coat goes great with most jeans, tees, and botton up shirts. If you want to spend the money, Express has a sweet leather jacket with the biker neck collar, but it could run you upwards to $300-$400. Express also has a cheaper (maybe $40-50) coat that is similar with more colors to choose from. The best bet is to look around and even hit up some mom and pop shops and stores similar to CoHoes, Marshalls, or TJ MaXx. They have different styles with cheaper prices.

I got a nice jacket from Wal-Mart for $15. Looks like a leather one but is made out of that slippery stuff and is pretty warm. Check out those stores.

Clothing items is also an "Anything Else" material.

If possible, I would suggest waiting until boxing day or, even better, until January before buying any expensive items of clothing. Most stores reduce the cost of their winter clothes quite considerably after Christmas so you can find some really good stuff for upto half price.

it's really up to you, do you want style over brand or brand over style? or if better you can get the best of both worlds.

Brand name stores like gap, expressmen, BR, club monaco, American eagle, you may event want to add old navy to this list (although it's lowend). Usually they alwways tend to share similar trends in jackets, as most of them are from one corporation. For me none of the styles there are for me.
I live in nyc, so there are clothing stores for everyone to dress differently. for most people in nyc, the ppl here dont go on brand name, usually they go for whats in fashion or an article of cltohing that distinguishes them to their unique personality.

I found a nice corduroy jacket this winter from a department store. For me its not about brand, its about style and what fits my personality.

i agree with SamePendo either ask a female assitant at the shop or take one of your female mates. But if u looking for a smart casual look here are three pics that could give you a idea.

Judging from what you say you wear, you probably want to go for a casual look without being too sophisticated. I reckon the third link from the poster above: http://www.next.co.uk/items/X34/shotview/328/M96598X34w.jpg
could be the sort of look that you might want.


However keep this in mind:

The big brands are NOT ALWAYS the way to go.

There are definitely a lot of quality clothing that is cheaper, looks just as good, and lack only one thing: a designer label.

Look around the mall/shopping centre, you'll find cheaper alternatives that are just as fashionable and comfortable (even Target and Kmart have quality stuff if you are willing to look for it).
