Quick Tips.
1. Buy an apartment as close to downtown/nightlife area as possible. If you live in an area that has no nightlife, MOVE. Get a studio/get a roommate do whatever you can. Use craigslist and with UBER you can live a little farther out since cab prices are cheap.
2. Buy a pillow top queen/king size bed.
3. Buy a 42 and up television.
4. Keep a mini fridge in your room stocked with bottle waters.
5. Have 2 bottles of wine.
6. Buy a nice sofa.
7. Load your refrigerator with various drinks and snacks.
8. Buy a plant that you can keep indoor or outdoors.
9. Keep your bathroom/entire apartment in impeccable shape. I always clean prior to going out.
10. Get interesting art, can be found cheap on craigslist.
11. Buy glade plug ins or insences and use them.
12. Tons of condoms by your bed.
13. Buy a nice bottle of shampoo, girls look down on guys with suave cheap products. I just fill an empty bottle of Paul Mitchell with some suave **** they have no clue.
14. Have a full bar and become competent in making drinks especially long islands, martinis, and vodka based drinks. I buy a bottle of grey goose and refill if with svedka or smirnoff they have no clue.
15. Buy really nice towels for decoration.
16. Keep your apartment clean and smelling good, I know its a repeat.
17. Get a bike and a bike rack to have on your wall.
I don't know about all this...you're talking about buying big screen TV's, bike racks, decorative towels, and full bars in your apartment just to impress women man? Have you ever seen Fight Club? Maybe it's because I move a lot and this sounds like hell, but I agree with some of these points.
Always keep your apartment clean and smelling good, have plenty of condoms, enough alcohol to pour a girl a few drinks, and art doesn't hurt. Also #13 is genius, buying the cheap stuff (which smells similar) and putting it in empty name brand bottles.
To OP, keep it simple! I don't necessarily mean not owning anything, by simplicity I mean find places that are highly inclusive and reduce the headaches on you from moving in and out to paying bills.
I no longer go to college, but rent off-campus student housing in Tampa. For $580 per person, I have a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom and this includes individualized leases, electricity, water, sewer, garbage, pest control, about 100 channels of basic cable, internet, parking, a tanning bed, a washer in dryer in every unit, a pool, hot tub, small gym, and furniture. When I moved in, the bed was comfortable enough and the black leather sofa and loveseat set was great. The rest was pretty basic but good enough for me. I love this style of living because anywhere I've lived in the past was similar pricing for an empty apartment with almost nothing included.
This style of living is not without it's drawbacks, because when something sounds too good to be true it usually is. Management is pretty long to respond to work orders and since it's a college community there are a lot of drugs, petty crime, and noise. But you do get a lot for what you pay for.
I would say regardless of the style of living you choose, a few universal rules include hard flooring (tile, wood style porcelain) in the common area is always nicer than carpet. Carpet is fine in the bedrooms, but a lot of apartments I had in the past were all carpet and this looks VERY cheap. Granite countertops and stainless steel cabinets always looks nicer than cheap lead or plastic.
The fewer roommates you can have the better unless you live with friends, because when you live with strangers the odds are against you getting along with everyone the more bodies in the room. Also, less is more because you can design the place in your image and have a say in how clean it is. I lived with 3 guys in a 4x4 before cutting it down to 1 guy in a 2x2, and this is a better situation. Hope this helps.
