Any of you guys know of a way to get a 'good' dirt cheap car? I'm talking about dirt -- cheap -- I don't care if it's used or anything.

An example of what I'm looking for would be like my buddy who got a 2005 Lexus for $2000.

Don't personally know any mechanics so buying from something Craigslist is a scary endeavor.

There's a checklist of things to look at when you buy a used car. If the oil looks like chocolate milk, then the head gasket is leaking, for example.

If an advertised deal looks too good to be true, it's likely a scam. The best deals I have gotten have been from waving cash at someone who really needed it. My $600 motorcycle would have been $2,600 at a bike shop in the summer, but right before Christmas when people are broke and need money, and the weather is too cold to ride, bikes can be bought for a fraction of their summer value. The $900 purchase price of my truck went to bail a guy out of jail. He needed that money more than he needed that truck, which is why I could buy it for half of what it was worth.

Call dealerships and ask about any recent trade ins that they have recieved and most of the time they'll sell them at a good price to avoid the hassle of extra work and money they have to spend on the car. Not full proof but worth a try
