I was just recomended this protein from a consultant at my local gym.

I read up on it online and I see its mostly derived from milk. My questions:

1) Well since I'm lactose intolerant I'm pretty sure this is a problem for me. I assume "milk isolate" under such products ingredients might/do contain lactose? Does anyone know if this is the case?

2) Also have/do any of you use this or some type of sustained release protein? If so can you offer any tips as its new to me.

Thanks.

Casein protein is a bulkier protein. It takes longer to digest. Thus, the amino acids will slowly feed into your bloodstream for a longer period of time.
Consistent aminos in the bloodstream means higher nitrogen retention, which promotes anabolism.
May not be a great idea for those who are lactose intolerant though.
Try it first, and see how you react.

I use protein blends, and protein isolates, and BCAAs.

The protein blends I use during the day, the isolate immediately after the workout, the BCAAs before the workout.

Kick,

the blends I'm talknig about are blends that have the following;

Whey Protein Isolate
Micellar Casein
Egg Protein
maybe Soy Protein
Whey Protein Concemtrate

..usually they have added vitamins/minerals, extra BCAAs, and EFAs added to the mix.

BCAAs are important preworkout because they are present in the blood stream during your workout.
Since the body uses BCAAs from muscle tissue during intense workouts, by taking some before you use less body protein as fuel, and can stay anabolic during stress.
Essentially, you keep circlating levels of aminos in your bloodstream during the entire day, and before, during, and after your workout.
Studies have shown the anabolic and beneficial effects of adding BCAAs to your diet. I'm sure you know how anabolic the BCAA Leucine is. So it makes sense to have plenty of it available during your the time when you are sending the body it's most potent anabolic signals. Taking it pre workout gives the body the necessary nutirents to have an optimum workout environment inside your body and to spare your own body protein.
By maintaining circulating levels of aminos in your bloodstream you always have an anabolic environment and maintain what;s called Positive Nitrogen Balance. That just means you don'y cannabalize muscle tissue.
No point in working out hard and heavy for you to justy lose it due to not enough BCAAs. WHich in the ned are really the aminos most responsible for muscle hypertrophy.
That's why Whey Protein Isolate is so desired fo9r body builders.
UNfortunately, Isolate is digested extremely wucikly! And doesn't stay in the bloodstream for more than an hour or two. this means you have to ingest yor does of protein every two or so hours. Some people have no problem with that, but some do.
That's opart of the reason why the protein blends are popular now.
you can have a protein shake, and whole foods, and maintain higher levels of circulating amionos.
Thas is the key.

Lactose is milk sugar. What caseine has a bunch of lactose in it? Caseine is the protein. I wouldn't think the maybe 1 or 2g of sugar that sneaks into a scoop of caseine would cause much trouble.

People who are lactose intolerant either don't have an enzyme, lactase, to break down lactose.

Or B, are allergic to casein.. My buddy is, and if he drinks literally 1 thimble of milk, he'd die.

Ruckus thanks for the info, but yes, I did know that lactose is milk sugar and casein is the protein.
:D
However, as you stated , lactose is still present. And I am no one to judge how they react to it though, that was my concern.
As blueyes corre lty stated as well, we are not doctors, and we can't just assume "everything will be ok.".

it depends on your own lactose (in)tolerance, so start with a small sample and see what happens. for what it's worth, product labeled isolate is probably a better bet than anything labeled concentrate for someone avoiding lactose.

Thanks for all the info from you all. :cheer:
I also learned lactose is a milk sugar and casein (a protein) doesn't have it.. so it should be ok (unless I'm really allergic to the casein, and not lactose.. but trial and error will reveal that in time)

I've diagnosed myself with lactose+soy intolerance as when I drank milk or soy milk I got bad gas, so I cut it out and then I was ok.

A few months ago I was adding a substantial amount of fat free yogurt and lactaid to some meal replacement shakes I was making at the time and I was ok for a few weeks then I got bad gas again. I then cut out the lactaid and yogurt (I do eat cheese, but not a lot) and its gone away again. Thank god too.. now when I pass gas I don't wilt near by foliage.:D

Also I used the link MrRuckus provided and ordered a pound of the "Calcium Caseinate" flav van (no extras).. so I'll be able to test if I can handle it. Thanks.

Turns out the Calcium Caseinate doesn't hurt my stomach so I just placed a bigger order for some more.

Now that I got one I can take, can you recommend a ballpark figure of how much I should take before I hit the sack?

I weigh about 160lbs with around 22% body fat. (if that helps)

Is 60 grams prior to bed in the ballpark?

Divide 160 into 5 or into 6 meals a day.

Duh me. The whole "bodyweight x1.5-2 in protein a day /number of meals = amount of protein per meal" equation = amt in that shake too.

Thanks.
