Car Insurance

Just wanted to make a thread on this topic. I'm clueless and need help from people with experiance! I looked over the internet, but couldn't find anything useful. I'm 17 and just finished my driver's ed, I'm too poor to afford my own car so I was hoping that my parents would just add me to their insurance coverage. But they refused and said it's TOO EXPENSIVE to insure a 17 year old male. So I was wondering how much it actually costs to add another person to the coverage? and also wanted to know how much it was on average to insure a teenager?

Yeah, I dont think you will be able to afford insurance if your parents arent willing to add you to their insurance.

It all varies from states to states. Vehicle to vehicle. Coverage to coverage. If your parents add you to their insurance ( liability coverage) they're looking at an average of $100-170 a month more than their regular rate, now this again depends on the states they are in plus their driving history as well. Insuring yourself is worse. A buddy of mine, age 25, pays $250/month for liability because he had been issued to speeding tickets. If you want to insure yourself, you're looking at atleast 170/month for liability.

The least expensive way is to have your parents put you on their policy unless they are terrible drivers. There's companies who take into consideration multi-driver home discounts in addition to discounts for students with good grades. There's another benefit if they have their home insurance with the same company. Also, taking an additional defensive driver course may gain you another discount. I'd also suggest that you pay your portion in advance to them (at least 3-4 months worth of premiums). It may be hard to come up with a few hundred dollars at once but it may cost almost double if you get insurance on your own.

I'm 16 and pay $220 a month for a 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro, thats with collision.
