Get some Alpine Type X for speakers. You wont find a good sub set up for $200 though.

Alright man, first, you need a good deck. Alpines are my favorite.

Then, get 4 speakers of the correct size for your car. Any car audio seller can look up the correct speaker sizes for you. I'd get 4 pioneer or alpine speakers. Kenwood are good too. 2 for $60 is a good deal, take advantage of it.

Now that you have your highs and midrange done, you need subs.

Any name-brand sub is good. The best for cheap are the Kicker CompVRs, and MTX 4000s. Sony XPlods are not bad, but not great. More expensive subs (over $100 each) are like any Alpine, Pioneer, MTX, Kicker, Audiobahn, Rockford Fosgate, maybe even Visonik.

Visonik has a pretty good starter kit for $130, which includes subs, amplifier, and box.. it's not bad.

I have two Pioneer 12"s that peak at 1000 watts each, RMS at 400, and have a 900 watt powering them, so each sub gets about 450 watts max. YOu should have your amp stronger than your subs, cuz your amp will overheat if you have the gain turned up to make your subs sound right.

My sound system new is worth $1055. I paid about $710 (not all at once), and I installed it myself.

That's my beat right there.. custom box and everything.

Your amp should have built-in crossovers or else you should buy crossovers so that you can use the amp to power the door speakers as well. They send the bass only to the sub, so that your doors don't rattle. Capacitors are a cheaper option, but don't work quite as well. They look like a cylinder about the size of your thumb, and you wire them in-line to the mid-range speakers to cut out bass.

If you buy subs and an enclosure separately, first check the manufacturer's suggested dimensions for the enclosure.

Put your tweeters in the dash or front doors only. (You don't sit backwards at a concert.) Bass is non-directional, meaning if you are in a room blindfolded and there is a sub going, playing only bass tones, you would not be able to point to the speaker regardless of its volume. This is why you can put subs in the back or trunk.

Alpine and Pioneer make good head units. If I was to splurge on one aspect of a system, I would get Boston Accoustics door speakers. When I was sampling speakers, the Bostons made the other speakers sound like they were under a blanket. Try ebay stores.

The new Pioneer/Premier decks model numbers start out with DEH and are in the 700s. If you're going to go with Pioneer, throw down a few extra bucks and buy Premier for the warranty.

I've had nothing but good luck with Pioneer. My first Premier deck lasted for 5 years. I've had the 940 in my car for 2 years now without a problem.

My set up-

Premier DEH 940
2 sets of Diamond Audio 6 1/2" components driven by a 400 watt phoenix gold amp
2 10" Diamond Audio subs driven by a 600 watt phoenix gold amp.

Beefy battery, caps, crossovers, custom box.... the whole 9 yards.

You don't even want to know the cost. Too much. >$3000 If only I could have that money back!

My alternator is basically on its last legs.

And it is all protected by a Viper and Beretta.... the best security money can buy.

I'm no expert, though I used to install car audio for a couple of years. IMO, you'll be happier setting your money on fire than buying the lower end Sony garbage.
