Hey, I want to gain muscle mass, some background info: 6' weigh around 150 lbs, I'm definitely not bulky but I'm not scrawny, my little bit of mass is all toned..

I started taking Jiu Jitsu classes, basically Tuesdays and Thursdays two hours each so a total of 4 hours. Every time I come out of it feels like ****ing great exercise and the next day all my muscles are sore as hell.

I read Warboss's and Diesel's guides to gaining and muscle mass and it seems to me you need to eat alot and work out alot as well so I'm thinking, would I get any muscle mass from doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? My leg muscles get pretty sore and my abs and back a little bit. Since I have access to my university's cafeteria free 24/7 food is not a problem for me, I eat alot before and after.

Is this good alone? Not effective for muscle mass at all?(Though it increases my endurance and flexibility alot) I'm thinking taking another perhaps another day of two hours exercise, maybe swimming, or arms and back, I don't think I need to do that many squats but I may be wrong. Thanks guys

I think it's good for general fitness and tone, but martial arts aren't going to put on bulk. If you want bulk, better push that iron.

When I first started martial arts, I too was sore in places I didn't even think could be sore. That's just because you aren't use to using all those muscles. They're sore because you're conditioning them for use in new ways. IOW, you're out of shape. After you've been doing martial arts for a few weeks, you'll no longer get sore from it anymore. You won't get big either. If anything, you may get smaller as fighting for extended periods of time burns a hell of a lot of calories.

Oh alright thanks dude, I guess I'll have to fit in three days of workout into my week.

Curious question, what martial arts do you do?

No, you won't get mass. You will get very toned from the intense cardio, though. I have been training for about a year and a half, mma & bjj. Mass is not really useful in a fighting sense - it just moves you up to a higher weight class. What is useful is maintaining a very low body fat percentage, so as to be as strong as possible for your weight. If you want to get bigger, that has to come from a diet and weightlifting routine that is separate from your jiu-jitsu training.

fwiw, a lot of girls like the toned look. I think it is about 50/50 with women whether they like a guy to be toned or have mass.

im a blue belt in BJJ, so i think i might be able to help you

yes, you will put on some muscle. not as much as say someone who hits the gym hardcore, but you will notice it.

what people dont think about bjj is that when you roll(practice against another opponent, this is a staple of every class), you are fighitng his strength and power.

its just like wrestling, actually excactly like it. you are fighting someone else's movements with you own, now technique is very important, more so than strength, but no matter what you are still using tremendous amounts of strength and energy.

trust me, you will add muscle. you will also get cut to ****ing shreds.

keep it up, its awesome, if you can, add in some striking, preferaly Muay Thai, that is the hardest thing you can do, and it will not only help you, it will make you an absolute badass!

who cares about muscles in a fight when you can knock them out with a headkick?
