I was interested in boxing and was wondering if any of you guys box or have advice for trianing. I dont have the $$ or time to go to boxing classes or get a personal trainer. Is there any advice and/or inexpensive equipment you could sugest. I did a quick google search and think I know a little about the basics (stance, jab, hook). Any advice would be great.

Boxing classes with someone to teach you, point out your mistakes, give you a good routine is worth MUCH more than getting the equipment yourself at home.

I'd say it's 5x more productive/better for you, speaking from personal experience in a very similar situation.

Things you CAN do at home is to get a skipping rope (heavier the better), a good pair of running shoes, and get to it. Run for 10-15 minutes at a pace you can keep that up at, do stretches, skip for 2.5 minutes, shadowbox (basically move and try and perfect your punches, not at a fast pace necessarily, you build that up over time), do the same, skip and then shadowbox again. After that you would do bag/pad work, go a couple of rounds on the focus pads, then do some defensive blocks, or something similar.

If you want to be a good BOXER, then go to a boxing class. If you just want to get fitter, stronger, with "textbook" (basic) knowledge of boxing moves, then I would reccomend you get a few extra pieces of equipment. These would be, HAND WRAPS, very important, BAG GLOVES, also important, both needed for bag work, and a "heavy bag". How heavy/tall are you? Depending on that, choose a good weight/size. The good ones have an inch of foam to protect your hands. You could try and get one of the fancy water filled bags, much easier on your hands, don't know what other differences they have though.

The answer to anything in boxing is PATIENCE and PERSERVERANCE, always have this in mind when you think you're not getting anywhere.

PM me sometime if you want any more info, specifics or anything, I was probably a bit vague in the post. I train at a boxing gym in a "class" for about 5 hours a week, and do weights another day suitable for boxing.

Also, you could check out the "east side boxing forum", do a google search for it, it's a great forum, lots of knowledgable people there, good for a read sometime or for asking specific boxing questions once you get into it.

boxing/kickboxing is an awesome awesome workout. Its great high intensity cardio and it works every muscle in your body.

i would pick a good boxing workout over any other cardio workout out there, even HIIT. Plus it makes you feel like an animal if you do it right.

My favorite thing is to go at the bag at the end of a workout with no gloves or wraps for a couple of minutes. Busts your hands to ****, but you feel every mistake you make, and get your fists conditioned a but.

You're only going to waste your time without an instructor. You're 16. If you get a job you can afford it.

It costs me $2 (AU) for every boxing training here. Meaning I go to the boxing gym and train with all equipment supplied for an hour and a half. There are 2 instructors there but they spend most of the time with the guys who actually fight. They still help me out with my technique a lot though and the other guys are a huge help.

But no punching no bag with no glove or wrap for me! Screw that.

It's unproductive to always go at it without protection, the bag doesnt give a **** about how tough you are its just training for the real thing. Plus it wont condition your hands against what sucks the most, broken nuckles.

only an idiot would do an entire workout without wraps and gloves.

like i said already, its good to do it for a couple minutes at the end of a workout.

you absolutely need to know what it feels like to punch that hell out of things and people with no protection. Otherwise you can be a pro with gloves, and fvck up on your first punch.

Unfortunately hitting someone without gloves feels alot different to hitting a punching bag without gloves :(. First fight i got into i broke 3 nuckles on a guys skull. Won the fight and ended up with worse injuries than the other guy. Now i use mainly elbows and knees outside the ring.

Meh, wraps are overrated for bag training. I used them for the first few months, but I stopped after I forgot them one session and didn't notice a difference. They're kind of a pain too.

I still use them for sparring however.
