Bigorexia---do You Suffer From It?

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

Personally I'm sceptical that the condition exists. The idea of Muscle Dysmorphia (or bigorexia) was only recently invented and by some guy a couple of years ago who came up with the idea for his Masters or PhD thesis or something. Basically he interviewed a lot of gym users and then came to some conclusions regarding the existence of the idea of reverse anorexia (though I think he started out with the intention of discovering it in the first place). I can remember reading an article on his claims when it first came out and thinking it was largely bull****. At any rate I'm willing to bet that it hasn't yet been officially recognised by any psychological associations yet (as anorexia has).

Though I think the guy who coined the term MD has hit on something I think that he has largely misunderstood it. My main beef with the idea of MD as invented by the aforementioned guy (whose name I don't know) is the idea that MD is simply a case of reverse anorexia where the guy actually has huge muscles but genuinely thinks himself a little weed with small muscles.

The basic idea of MD is that there are guys out there with huge 19" arms (like me) who genuinely think they have muscles smaller than your average man in the street and as a result they are in the gym frantically working out trying to get normal sized muscles.
This is where the guy who invented MD goes wrong - he claims that the guys with huge muscles think they have smaller than average muscles and are frantically trying to build muscles the same size as every body else. He thinks that there are huge 18 stone guys out there who perceive themselves to be 9 stone little weaklings. This is nonsense.

The huge 18 stone guys with 19" arms (like me) who are frantically trying to get even bigger still because they think their muscles are too small are perfectly well aware that they are very much bigger than your average man in the street and for that matter bigger than your average gym user or even 99% or regular gym users. They are very well aware that they are already huge.

The real issue is why does the guy with the 19" arms who is already much bigger than most other guys still feel the need to be bigger still? Why does the guy with huge 19" arms feel that he needs those huge 19" arms, why does he need to be bigger than all other guys just to feel normal? That's where the real pathology of the condition lies - in the fact that in order to be a man the MD guy thinks he needs muscles 10 times bigger than any other man.

To test my claims; if you're a regular 11 stone guy, then next time your in the gym, go up to one of the muscle bound 17 stone guys with bulging pecs and biceps wearing the baggy T shirt (supposedly to hide his muscles which he erroneously thinks are too small) and say to him "move biatch I need this bench". If the guy gets up and lets you have his bench then you know that he does in fact really perceives himself to be just a little 9 stone weakling (despite being a 17 stone hulk). On the other hand if he punches you on the nose then you know that he is perfectly well acquainted with the correct relative size difference between you two.

The point is, sure there are huge muscly guys obsessed with their looks, watching what they eat, constantly weighing themselves and looking in the mirror admiring themselves (like me) but they don't suffer from any dysmorphia, they are perfectly well in touch with how big they actually are (if anything they probably overestimate the size of their muscles relative to other guys). A more correct term for these guys might be (muscle narcistic disorder).

In other words MD is not just a simple case of reverse anorexia where a guy with huge muscles thinks he's a little weed, it's more of a case of a guy with huge muscles who knows his muscles are huge, who knows that his muscles are three times bigger than most other guys but who thinks this isn't good enough but that he needs to have muscles 10 times bigger than everybody else. It's more of a case of a guy thinking that in order to be a man he needs to be a superman. So sure a disorder may be involved but it is not just simply reverse anorexia, it is more complicated than that. At any rate it is not a dysmorphia as it does not involve a misperception of how big his muscles are relative to everybody else but rather a misperception of how big his muscles ought to be relative to everybody else.

I would go further and say that the so called MD phenomenon is not a disorder at all from a psychological point of view (being vain may be morally undesirable but it does not make you a nut case). (Being out of touch with reality is what makes you a nut case - its the one thing all psychological disorders have in common - but the guys who supposedly suffer from MD are not out of touch with reality). Males of all vertebrate species compete with other males to be the biggest and the best (and man is no exception in this area). It makes sense for men to compete with other men to be the biggest because the stakes are high (the right to mate with the prettiest women) are thus gain the best genetic material for ones offspring (and don't give me that bull about girls don't go for guys with big muscles - if you think this then you obviously don't have experience owning big muscles).

Excellent post, alpha. I don't think we're obscessed with bodybuilding because we want muscles that look normal or better than normal - we've achieved that already, and are well aware of it. Like you said, it's the desire to stand out, to be well above the crowd. It's the neverending chase for perfection, which we know is unattainable, but yet we strive to get as close to it as humanely possible. Ever seen Gattaca?
