Welcome to Part 2 – The Lounge

The bathroom (covered here:http://www.sosuave.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22903) is like the backstage of your performance: if it’s not in right order, then nothing’s going to work. Get that right first.

The Lounge is the main theatre. This is where you spend most of your time at home (when awake). It’s also the place you’ll take your girl to first, and where you’ll make the first move (unless she’s VERY horny).

I must reiterate the importance of getting your apartment right. Women will make judgements of you based on your apartment. If she’s thought of you as a sophisticated man, she’ll be looking for evidence of it in your apartment.

Again what follows is a collection of tips based on my experience, women’s opinions and a professional “bachelor pad” consultation.

Keep it Tidy!
Women respect a tidy place more than an expensive one. Remember this. No clutter at all! Spotless! It’s not nice work, but do it. This is the single most important tip in the whole post.

Coffee Table
Get a nice one. Glass ones look very cool. Try to keep it empty except for mats (for drinks) and a selection of…

Magazines
You need a good selection of magazines on your coffee table. It’s up to you which ones you use, but try to have at least:

- A current affairs magazine (economist, time, businessweek)
- A lifestyle magazine (The London Magazine, cigar aficionado, millionaire)
- A recent Paper (think The Times, Not the Sun/USA today)

Other ones to try
- Property Magazines
- Boating Magazines
- Anything that hints at a lifestyle you have or a striving for

Don’t have:

- Porn (obviously)
- Men’s magazines (Loaded, Maxim, FHM, Playboy etc.)
- Tabloid Papers (Sun, Mirror, USA today)
- Women’s magazines – they’ll think your strange, not accommodating.

Books
When you fix your woman a drink/go to the toilet/ leave the lounge, she will rift through your books to try and gauge what kind of man you are. I don’t know what kind of impression you are trying to give, so I can’t advise you personally on what to get. Try to keep the same theme as your magazines (e.g. don’t have “How to become CEO” in your bookshelf, and “Socialist Review” on the coffee table). Women are looking for congruence. Here are some classics for provoking some kind of thoughts:

Driven – The Prince(Machiavelli), Art of War(Tzu), On War(Clauswitz)
Cultured –Catcher in the Rye(Salinger), A Clockwork Orange(Burgess), To kill a Mockingbird(Lee)
Thoughtful/intelligent – Catch 22(Heller), Brave New World(Huxley), 1984(Orwell)

In order to not be perceived as ordinary and dull, hide Grisham & Clancy novels. Stick to classics and non-fiction. Books on management look good if you’re projecting a business like image. Also have some books on your interests. If you’ve said “Oh I like watching paint dry too” earlier, having the dry paint spotter manual will help. Again, you can develop conversation points.

Couch
Your couch is probably where you are going to make the move. It needs to be comfy and attractive. Here’s some tips for those of you with less than perfect couches:

- Buy a large quality piece of cloth, and drape it over the couch. It will make it look much better. Get one big enough to cover it completely.
- Buy large fluffy pillows to put on the couch. Women love these

Whatever your couch, you need a big fluffy blanket. This is very intimate, and you have to be close to share it. If your sneaky, you turn down your heating so she really needs to get under it with you.

Here’s an important tip: place other chairs a reasonable way away from the couch. If you place them close, she’s gonna sit on them. Your aim is to get her to sit on the couch with you. If you place chairs a long way away, she’ll feel stupid sitting on them, and if she doesn’t say “How can I talk to you over there? Come sit here.”

Hi-Fi

This is where you should spend money if you want to. Forget the widescreen TV, forget the games console, the Hi-Fi is the only real piece of electronics with pulling power. The smarter the unit the better. I’m not going to go on about which one to get other than to say that separates systems are sexier. You get what you pay for with Hi-Fi. Remember that. Music is up to you. My advice on music is this:

- Jazz and Blues is sexy
- Love songs say “I’m trying too hard”
- Men don’t listen to Britney Spears or S Club at home
- Rare and unusual music is often a good talking point
- Be careful with easy listening.

Finally, place your remote by the entrance, and get into the routine of turning on music as soon as you get in. You can then play music straight away and act as if you’d do it even without her. This is why I think romantic music may backfire – she’ll figure your game early.

TV
Not very important for seduction, contrary to many beliefs. As men though, we all value a nice TV. Get a good TV for yourself, not to impress women. You can even get by without a TV for seduction (but not for yourself!)

Art
Posters stuck on the wall with blu-tack are not allowed. Stick by this mantra “If it’s not Framed, it’s not going in the Lounge”. Ultra-cool things to have framed are:

- Computer generated pictures from www.digitalblasphemy.com – buy them on canvas and frame them
- Retro advertising posters
- Interesting tobacco or alcohol adverts
- Any art that fits with the theme of your apartment (and therefore you)

Smokers Requisites

I’m adding this because I enjoy quality tobacco, and have received good feedback on this. If you don’t like smoking or know anything about cigars, don’t do this. It’s also an expensive pastime. Equally remember that tobacco consumption can offend certain women. I’m not interested in such women, but you may be.

Find an online tobacco store like www.tomtom.com and get some good gear. I have the following setup which looks very cool:

- Quality cigar Ashtray
- Cigar humidor containing ~40 cigars
- Dunhill Silver classic Lighter
- Dunhill Silver cigar cutter
- Selection of major cigarette brands, in special display case (great for handing out)

This works because it says you’re a man who enjoys the finer things in life and pays attention to the details. This effect can be achieved in more politically correct ways e.g. Fine Wines and accessories.

Scented Candles
Sets the right mood. Always looks and smells good. I normally reserve this for the bedroom, when a more intimate atmosphere is required. It can however, work in the lounge too. Remember this: cinnamon and vanilla are aphrodisiacs!

OK that's the Lounge done! Next up the kitchen (Including what to stock in it!)

Good post. I have one thing to add on the subject of books: If you stuff your shelves with classics, you might come accross as pretentious, or even worse - somebody who bought them to look good and hasn't even read them. Besides, you always run the the risk of her asking about some book or other. So I'd say, keep the ones you enjoy and make sure you actually read them :)

Sorry for not making that clear. You must, of course, read the books. As I said they can often become conversation points if she has read it. You will look a fool if you haven't read any of the books on your shelf.

Don't forget lighting! Get lights that plug into the wall, and connect them to a dimmer switch. They have dimmers that can adapt to any lamp....you simply plug the dimmer between the outlet and the lamp cord (I've seen them at IKEA).

I didn't know that. I never liked vanilla air fresheners in my car - but I might consider cinnamon in future!

I'll be living off campus next year, some of your suggestions from both posts so far are subtle but perfect. Good stuff, keep it coming.

I didn't think of it putting it in your car! Clever idea - warm her up nicely before she even gets home! She'll associate those smells with your car, which can only be a good thing!
