Calling is easier to mess up, but more effective if done right IMO. If you do call, keep it brief like 5-10 min. Long enough to say a few interesting things, have a laugh or two, and that's it. If you're both engaged in the conversation it can be easy to talk for 20+ min. Don't. Don't turn the phone call into a mini date.
