My grandfather had bad knees, my father has bad knees. At a young age, I've felt knee pains--so chances are, I will have knee problems. Since I don't go to the gym, I don't squat--but in the future, I plan to go to the gym and squat. I've heard squatting is bad for people with bad knees.

Is there anyway to get better knees, or squatting without hurting my knees worse?

here are a few tips:

>dont do high impact exersizes like running, instead do bicycling, or walking and always wear shoes with good soles and with good support

>if you do run / jog , you should run on a dirt track instead of asphault / cement surfaces and wear a good pair of running shoes that will absorb the impact

>being overweight also puts extra stress on the knees, so try to maintain your weight and dont get too heavy.

I have good knees and hardly ever run on the street or asphalt. I run on trails or on a treadmill but only twice a week max. I mix my cardio up wtih the elliptical, stair stepper and some swimming to get results without beating on my knees.
Also go to a running shop to get sized up for shoes if you dont know what you are doing.
When I put on some weight my normal shoes werent cutting it so I bit the bullet and paid extra at the shop (couldve got them cheaper on line) for some Brooks Beast. Runs were easier and my posture felt better in addition to my body not feeling any weird aches.

My knees are completly wrecked, 4 screws in the left one, and I've had numerous operations on the cartilage in both.

surprisingly, I can still do squats, and haven't experienced any pain in them when doing them, but I haven't been doing them for a great amount of time.

I'm aware that squats can be bad for the knees, but its a bit of a catch 22, because obviously having stronger leg muscles is good for them because it takes the strain off the joint.
