how long can you take a break from lifting without atrophy occuring...i was planning on taking a week off is that too much time or what?

Lol, you worry too much. There are many people who don't work out at all and theyre fine. Muscle atrophied come from not use of a particular muscle for years. you move em everyday

Not only should you not worry about taking a week off, you should make it a point to take a week off every 3-4 months, to prevent over-training. 1 week won't hurt you, you'll find out you have more energy during the first workout back than you did did before your break.
