Is there anything bad about having a high-sodium diet? It seems like a lot of the "fat-free" or "lowfat" meats get loaded with salt.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe more sodium will make you retain more water.

Yes it will, but more gets flushed out as your body strives for homeostasis.

There are also other places large amounts of sodium are found like, canned or preserved foods.

be wary of salty and preserved foods in general, many of which contain MSG; which causes permanent neurological damage in mice and other animals in lab tests

if you take in high amounts of sodium, the trick is to keep your potassium levels on par (its a trace mineral so not to much or you heart will fail) and keep you water intake high also then there souldnt be a problem
