And here's a related article:

http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/11/the-evolution-of-*****iness/281657/

The money quote:

The evidence favors the view that women have worked to stifle each other’s sexuality because sex is a limited resource that women use to negotiate with men, and scarcity gives women an advantage
also:

In his research in the 1990s, University of Texas psychologist David Buss found that women were more likely than men to “derogate,” or insult, their mating rivals in two ways, as he described to me in an email:

First, the “slut” factor: “spreading gossip that the rival woman is 'easy,' has slept with many partners, and is basically, in my terms, pursuing a short-term mating strategy.”

Second, on physical appearance: “Saying the woman is ugly, has fat thighs, and an astonishing variety of other vicious things about a rival's physical appearance and mode of dress, such as wearing revealing clothing, plunging necklines, or short skirts.”
In his book, The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating, Buss argues that women do this because, evolutionarily, women who are willing to have casual sex undermine the goals of women who want long-term relationships. "Slutty" women hint to men that it’s okay not to commit because there will always be someone available to give away the milk for free, as it were. Their peers' “derogation” is thus intended to damage the reputation of these free-wheeling females.

To Armstrong, the shooting highlighted that “slut” is simply a misogynistic catch-all, a verbal utility knife that young people use to control women and create hierarchies. There may be no real sluts, in other words, but there are real and devastating consequences to slut-shaming.
Pfft. Of course there is such a thing as "sluts". Who cares how women define the term? What's important is how men define it. If women use "slut-shaming", it's because it works. The more partners a woman has, the lower her SMV goes - in the eyes of men, anyway - except for use as a porn star, a stripper, or a *** dumpster.

By the way, I notice they had to throw Elliot Rodger's name in there.

In related news, men were more likely to describe other men as "AFCs" or "betas". :)

"Slutty" women hint to men that it’s okay not to commit because there will always be someone available to give away the milk for free, as it were.
Of course there will always be such women available. As long as you don't mind dipping into the same hole as 100 other c0cks.

While that book (Buss' "Evolution Of Desire") is quoted quite often as some kind of proven scientific reference, it's really just a culmination of SURVEYS of mostly college age students. And if you know anything about surveys, people RARELY tell the real truth, they only say what they'd like to believe themselves.

The only that that is scarce is women's ovaries, which influences their UNCONSCIOUS thinking, not any kind of conscious use of sex.

Bottom line, sluts (or girls that have had several partners, or however else you'd like to define it) are MORE VALUABLE to men as short term flings, but LESS VALUABLE to men as long term partners.

Sleaze accordingly, ladies.

It doesn't matter anyway. What does a modern woman have to offer besides sex? Sex is sex, her sluttiness is irrelevant as long as you use protection.

Now if you want to marry that's a different story. But in the west circa 2014, if you are seeking marriage/cohabitation then your mindset is all wrong anyway. The relative sluttiness of this slut to that slut is the least of your problems.
