I hate to use the term but here is one of the most concise definitions of the concept I've encountered. You can just listen to the audio but the cartoons are brilliant.

In a nutshell: Alpha gets first choice of meat and mate.

What does this mean in the modern world?

• First choice of meat (he has enough resources to go to Whole Foods and Steakhouses and pay for dates)
• First choice of mate (he is physically powerful and strong enough to take anyone in the room in a fight)

Summary - if you are broke OR weak, you are not Alpha. Get a job and hit the gym.
