is nothing new really, check the streamers, anyone who don't have they cam open have lower number of viewers, now if they open they cam and is a guy change little, now if is female they jump.
or do like a Fellow I know when we played online, he made a female char and talked like it was a girl and acted like a girl in the game, he would get free items and money, hell he even pushed his little sister to play along talking with guys then to prove it was really a girl he would open his cam and show his sister, saying he would only open for a few seg because his parents didn't like him/her on the cam.
