Depends on what your most comfortable with, your plans for it(is it just for home or are you going to carry it concealed?) your experience with guns and what you shoot most accuratly.
With that price you are pretty much limited to the cheaper handguns like Glock or Smith and ya might even have to buy used.
Go to a gun shop or range, preferably one where you can test fire several different models and calibers to find what most suits you. I'd pay particular attention to Glock, or Sig Sauer and HK although these might be out of your price range.
