"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

(Backstory: girl I like is taken, I wrote down my number and told her to phone me when she's single and left. got people there excited. some guys are now jealous. seen girl when i was out and about and she honked her horn and waved at me with her friend as she passed. Haven't seen her in the weeks since.)

I was walking down a hallway and saw two guys. One nodded towards me and I walked up to them.

We greeted.

The "Alpha" of the two tried to keep me out of the conversation and just stared at his friend and continued talking. I just stood there for a while, interested in seeing what they're talking about.

"Alpha": Hey, do you remember that party we had [at place]?

Wannabe: Yeah?

Alpha: "X" (the girl that everyone knows I like because she seems to have gossiped it around) approached me.

Wannabe: [looks at me, I look back at him with my best blank expression]

This guy is obviously jealous and wants to get me pissed. He detours and started talking about the pub where this event took place.

"Alpha": Blah, blah blah.

(I was quite bored. He must have been an AFC alpha to gloat.)

"Alpha": (finally pauses and shuts up)

I wanted to get out of there smoothly because he was trying to be a jackass, plus I was incredibly bored.

Me: (to "Alpha") I hope you feel better man. (He told me earlier that he felt sick.)

"Alpha": Take care man.

Me: (looks over at Wannabe) Nice to see you again.

Me: (calmly walks away from the two lamers)

Did I AMOG or get AMOGGED?

"She Wants a Man, Not a Boy"

You asked her if she wanted to grab coffee. Then you asked if the time worked. Then you asked if the place was okay. Then you asked if she'd prefer tea.

Four questions. Four chances for her to say no. Four signals that you're terrified of making a decision.

Plan it. Pick the place. Pick the time. Tell her where to meet you. She'll either show up or she won't.

Either way, you look like a man instead of a scared little boy.
