I don't understand how people have friends like this. This guys friend sounds like a very weak piece of work. What happens if tomorrow it benefits his friend and his girlfriend to screw him over, as far as I am concerned it's nobodies responsibility but the girlfriend to pay off her student loans. If she studied something worth a damn she can pay it herself, if she got one of those useless degrees like gender studies that's her problem not his.
