The ACLU isn't defending NAMbLA's "right" to have sex with boys, they're defending NAMbLA's right to have rights.
They do have a right to be batsh*t crazy; it's in the Constitution. I don't think anyone can deny that NAMbLA is pretty ass-backwards–no pun intended–but they still have Constitutionally-guaranteed rights.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

The ACLU does not approve of fvcking NAMBLA. However, the ACLU does think it's just as ridiculous to sue that organization for one member's individual actions as it is to sue tobacco companies because one gets cancer from smoking their cigarettes or to sue the NRA because one of its members commits a crime using a gun.
That is why the ACLU is defending NAMBLA in this particular case.

The evangelical right, having gotten bush his presidency, but feeling betrayed has their own candidate for the next election. In a close race the "eve's" win. Their first goal is restoring the " moral order" of america. Family values and all. Using the broad language of the patriot act they " go after" the moral corrupters in society. Sosuave is shut down and all members are rounded up ( with the patriot act powers and todays technology it would be easily possible). Even those members on foreign soil are rounded up.
Oh wait.... reality strikes and the ACLU comes to the rescue and the alternate universe never occurs.

...but in a witty turn of events, the ACLU turns into a comunist government, and everything is censured, so no one on either side can say anything, for fear of "offending" someone.
Come on, the ALCU is a drag onsociety now. It used to be neccessary, but not really any more. Of course, the argument will now become, "but wavejams, racism and exploitation of hard workers and all still goes on."
You're right, but now the shoe is on the other foot. It is beter to be one of the minorities, or a member of NAMBLA or something. You get benefits and all out of it. Just my opinion though. (and no, obviously I am not after the benefits, ort part of any of the minorites other than being latin)

more than ever is the ACLU needed now. Under Bush the government has started reducing the freedoms we have now. If you are a " terrorist" you can be rounded up and held without charges as long as they see fit. Bush wants clearance for the CIA to be able to use torture. AT the last state election in south dakota the republicans wrote down liscence plate numbers of native americans going to polling booths in a form of voter intimidation as part of a hottly contested senate race. That same election there was, in many states, voting on if to make gay marrige illeagal... All of these things narrowing the freedoms that people have.
It would be like the communist government in "1984."
We'd spy on our own citizens without representative oversight.
We'd wage endless wars against concepts, which, of course, can't be defeated.
The enemy would become one amorphous mass, and so we wouldn't care how many of them die.
If you were to lodge any complaints about the government's behavior, you'd be labeled anti-American and a friend of the enemy.
Justification for serious actions would shift as necessary.
Fake, pro-government news stories would be supplied to, and aired on, mass media.
Supposedly independent news columnists would be secretly paid to write propaganda.
Previously unbelievable truths, like global warming is not happening or evolution is just an unsupported idea, would become widely accepted.
Citizens would be caught up in meaningless conspiracy theories propagated by a few loud-spoken conspiracy theorists.
The states with the highest intelligence, tax rates, and most history would be labeled the most morally corrupt and least American.
We would be holding American citizens indefinitely without the right to trial.
The government would insist that it has never lost the moral high ground, ever.
Yeah. That would suck.
