What happens is: hot chick has a guy friend talking at a table. You go up to table, say whats up. Girl feels awkward, guy does a ****ish "Where'd yo come from?"
Basically, how do you get close to girls when there are always guys around her who are much closer than you? Who will ****block you all the time?

Get a wing. Enter the set with a opener directed mostly to the guy. In the conversation tease the chick(related to what you and the guy is talking about) And keep your body language directed toward the guy, and keep eye contact with both.

Gradually start involving her more in the interaction. Then you could move the group. If you can't, read up on Tyler Durden's AMOGging tactics. And use them at this point. Now the chick should be attracted.

Your wing can come in 5 minutes after you've opened the set, and gradually start occupying the dude.

You seem to be coming from a position of lower value. You are the "tag-on" if I can use that word without offending you.

I am the tag-on. I don't think that just passively continuing to be the tag-on will magically make me the alpha. What kind of steps can I take to become that man

i see 2 options:

try to enter their group and make yourself seem alpha. try to win over the guys first, maybe separately

or

go straight up to the girl, take her hand, 'you, i need to talk to you, come' and lead her to privacy. this is best if you have the skills to pull it off.

It's true, passively continuing to be low will not make you alpha.

Actively trying to be alpha will not make you alpha. Trust me, I've tried.

Smiling, radiating joy, and not worrying about social status will make you alpha. These are all passive, but must be actively learned.
