He was lucky he had witnesses, that's what probably saved him from staying in jail and being tangled with this mess. However the investigation is still pending so this guy is not out of the woods yet. He was also lucky that the two guys were intoxicated so it makes his case looks better.

Not only were they under the influence, I believe both of the attackers also had extensive rap sheets. You're right about one thing, though: it's very difficult to prove your innocence in self-defense situations. Then again, I doubt I'll be thinking about that in a do or die situation. I value my life greatly - so much so that I'm willing to take a yours if it means keeping mine. I'm not going to let me or mines become a sad story...if I can help it.

It's a little different in an mma fight, because you have gloves and rules. In a street fight, your first target is the eyes, that would be the softest spot. I know that's gross, but eye gouges and crotch kicks are the two most fundamental moves of fighting without rules. Those two moves, combined with brutal joint locks that broke anything they touched, is how the Samurai warriors defended Japan for 1000 years. Dirty fighting works.

More importantly, if you are on the bottom in a situation like that, whatsthe best defense assuming you don't know BJJ submissions... Is there a way to reverse the position?

Yes. That is the first thing we teach people how to drill, after they learn how to fall and how to shrimp-crawl. I know a guy who died in a street fight after another guy sat on his chest and beat him to death. Knowing a mount escape would have saved his life.

I am not saying you aren't right but you got to prove that if you killed someone that he was seriously intended to harm you ...

Nope. You have to show that a reasonable person in your situation would have feared for life or limb. You don't have to prove anything about the assailants actual intent per se. To put it in perspective, I'll go to absolutely incredible lengths to stay out of trouble and avoid conflict. I'll let a thief have my stuff, as long as my life and those I love are safe.

To convince me to shoot will take a lot, but once the line is crossed, I will not hesitate.


This is why fighting is idiotic, and people who obsess over it need to grow the hell up.

I always try to stay out of trouble, but I won't hesitate to shoot someone if they attack me.

I agree, however it's not something I would do lightly. I value life a lot, and I'm dead serious when I say something like this would almost surely bother me to my last breath. Then on top of that, there is a potential social stigma, and the shooter will probably be financially ruined before it's over.

So yes, it has to be a last resort, life or limb.
