I had heard that excerpt from the show. Apparently this guy knew *early on in his relationship* that she wasn't over her ex and preferred her ex. Like a lot of guys, he put blinders on, he probably rationalized a whole lot too ("She'll change", "It's different this time", "but I love her"), and he settled for someone who settled for him.

Big lesson: when dating, pay attention to the frickin' flags instead of excusing them away!
