This is like training wheels on a bike. What is the purpose of training wheels? With them, you learn how to ride (or at SS, how to be a true man) and get comfortable with it, albeit with some help. Once you are ready, you take the training wheels off, and go out on your own. After awhile you become a natural, and it becomes something you can't forget (riding a bike, or being a man)

But be careful not to use either one as a crutch for too long, or you will become dependent. Get out on your own and carve a path all your own!

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.
