Exactly. I see your point too. I have been invited to be a member of Professional Organizations for "Younger" people. Meaning people in their mid to late 20s starting their careers in my field. I am a subject matter expert in my field and have been doing this for years (if I choose management as a career, I would be their boss)...but I still get invited to their happy hours, etc. I am naturally cool. So, I understand what you mean when you can merge with these 20s people.

He's not my favorite actor, but I have watched him interviewed several times. He is not the outlandish guy in the Pirates movies.... he's a laid-back guy. Definitely a DJ. This is how I'd like to be at that age. You think he has problems relating to "younger" people or talking about interesting cultural things that are happening? Do you see that picture and think "oh gee, middle age"? lol. The guy is just cool, not pretending. I guarantee if he wasn't famous, the guy in that picture, with the kick-back attitude he has, would be plowing through 20-something chicks.

Robert Downey Jr. Is that guy not a DJ? Maybe he's got some inner demons, but the guy is 43 and just about to be in a huge movie, Iron Man. Which will have sequels. So he will be in his late 40s playing Iron Man and people will say what they always have, that he is cool and yeah, even without being famous, plowing through 20-something chicks.

In my examples I think I make it pretty clear what I am talking about. Anyways, everytime I go out there are examples of a man who is aging well, and a man who is trying hard not to age.

It's like AGE OLD AGING MIDDLEAGE are all taboo words. Get over it! Its a fact of life. (Psssht, STR8UP, I am not just talking to you here )

The man who is trying hard not to age because he has bought into society's warped obsession for youth, is never a pretty sight. Don't be that guy.

Downey is NOT a DJ. He lived a life of self-destruction and drug addiction. Hardly DJ qualities.

If you take the analogy that life is a game and we are all competitors, it only makes sense that those with more experience are more adept competitors. That doesn't mean that there are no exceptions to the rule, i.e. younger all-stars.

Yea, all you have to do is look at that picture of Johnny Depp and see a guy who isn't pretending to be anything. He could be an actor or a business owner or a construction worker for that matter, and he would still be who he is.

The thing is, being in the entertainment biz or having fame or status gives you a free pass with society. It's bullsh!t, but that's the way it is.

Since I have a business that is on television I get some of these "passes" thrown my way, but even if I weren't in the position I'm in I wouldn't be worried about conforming to society's ridiculous ideals. Hell, I don't get any flak from people who know my age but DON'T know my status, because I carry myself properly. I can dress in American Eagle and still get complimented by 22 yr old chicks telling me it looks great on me.

I realize that SOME guys my age couldn't pull this off, but it has more to do with their defeatist attitude that MAKES them unattractive and awkward than the actual fact that they don't dress and act the way **most** 36 yr old guys do.

It's all in the the attitude fellas. It's all in the attitude.

Everyone has a tell. Everyone has something which will give them away when they're bluffing. For most Mature Men it's thier age or attitude.

I'm 34 going on 25. I feel it, I know it. You can't bullsh!t a bullsh!tter and I won the World Heavyweight title from my old man.

What gets me are these guys who hit their mid-afternoon crisis and go nutts with overhauling thier appearance. They'll get a stupid dangling earring from Spencers in the mall or get some fruity ass t-shirt with a cartoon character on it to give them a "hip" vibe.

It doesn't work and, in fact, backfires. It leaves a stink behind them as they walk by which reeks of insecurity and reaching.

Age is a mentality moreso than a physical trait. Treat it as such.

I am out of it when it comes to jeans. I may be the only guy who wears levis still. That used to be all there was, now there are so many I don't even know where to start. Wouldn't mind some jeans with a better fit.

Actually, in high school and my early twenties since I'm the artist type myself, I always wore crazy clothes, mainly thrift stores, definitely had my own style. I don't know what happened but when I started working, I STARTED getting boring. In my 20s I wanted to fit in. Or, I didn't want to stand out.

Used to take fashion really seriously, as expressing myself, then I got lazy and I'd just go to Mervyn's on a lunch break and just take whatever had a collar.

Point is, I was not being myself. But I thought I was "too old" to wear clothes that were more flashy or unique. Don't know where it came from.

Getting out of that now, and feeling more myself. Feels dirty when I throw my cool away.

That's why I have to be careful about this. I have seen some men older than me who dress like 25 year olds and it does'nt look right because their personality contradicts their overall appearance. You can dress accordingly to your age group in a formal/casual way but be very selective and careful in buying casual clothing.

I am not getting this whole "dress your age" discussion. I wear clothes that are fashionable and up to date. I might wear designer jeans from Diesel or Energie, or a jacket or shirt from Zara or I might pick up some shorts from H&M. These are the same stores that people in their 20s might shop at. And I see many guys in their 30s and up shopping at these stores. I am not going to all of a sudden start shopping for my clothes at Sears or something just because I am 40. I think my style suits me. I wear stylish clothes and don't look "fruity" or anything. Dress how you like and what makes you feel good. Who cares if people think you are not "dressing your age". Most of the people who have such opinions lead BORING lives.

I would LOVE to make a trip to Germany once a year to buy clothes. Berlin has some great shopping. I bought a kick ass leather jacket for about $200, a bunch of shirts for around $30....stuff that would cost 50% more over here, IF you could find it.

The Europeans aren't nearly as stuck on this stodgy "dress your age" crap. Somewhere along the way Americans really got a stick up their ass and decided that everyone should follow "code". It has been slowly disappearing as many people realize that there is no longer a generation gap that separates us mid 30's to mid 40's Gen X guys from the two generations that followed us.

I've never EVER seen anyone being scared out of a shop over here for being of a certain age. But hey, like MrLuvr said...perhaps it is different over here. When I shop for clothes, it's 20-30-40-50-somethings all in one place. Perhaps the real niche style shops are like that, I don't know. I like stylish, fashionable and goodlooking clothing, but am not into the really offworld things. That Johnny Depp style isn't all that uncommon here btw.

And even if you are into really freaky fashion at 50...shop where you fvcking want.

Yes, it is different over there. I was in your city a few weeks ago, dropped into this mall not too far from the square over there. Some really nice, designer clothes. Stuff you would never find in N America.

And I don't think you have the "date your age" crap over there either. Date who you want, as long as she is of legal age. Over all the society is much less judgemental and not as conservative as in N America.

As far as dressing goes, when I say don't dress like a 21 year old when you are 45, I mean the trendy stuff, not classics. Some things are timeless and will look good on a 12 year old, a 21 year old, a 40 year old.

Its like the women who are 50 but are wearing minis with a Baby Phat tummy shirt. Its not like they think they look bad, but they do.

So do 40 year olds wearing the same things their sons are wearing to school. You can argue about it all you want, but you look funny, son!

Europeans have a much better sense of style than Americans. That could be a reason why style is ageless over there.
