"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

Well, as of today, it's been one year that I've been dating my gf long distance(2hrs away). Well actually, we didnt actually start dating until August, but our first kiss and the day we met was a year ago today. Here's what I have planned:

1. booked a nice motel room - 2 nights(Fri/Sat)

2. bought a nice little necklace with purple pendant

3. taking her out to dinner

4. Bubble bath and wine for the motel room with candles and massage oil.

I had planned to put together a little photo album with a bunch of pictures that I took during the past year, but I was unable to do it because I was away on the road for work. I also plan to make her a cd of songs that we both know and are significant to us. I think I'll give her both of these on the anniversary of our first date in August.

I thought it would be good to give her something of meaning. I wanted to take a picture of the place where we fits kissed and then frame it in a little 5x7 in black and white. Everything is closed here because it's Canada day, but they'll open up again on Saturday morning so I thougt i'd sneek out of our hotel room and do that. Do you think it's over kill for what I already have planned? Should I just wait until the anniversary of our dating and do all the other stuff? What do you think?

"She Wants a Man, Not a Boy"

You asked her if she wanted to grab coffee. Then you asked if the time worked. Then you asked if the place was okay. Then you asked if she'd prefer tea.

Four questions. Four chances for her to say no. Four signals that you're terrified of making a decision.

Plan it. Pick the place. Pick the time. Tell her where to meet you. She'll either show up or she won't.

Either way, you look like a man instead of a scared little boy.

I think one night at the hotel would be enough to make her feel special. You don't really need to spend all the money and effort to make her appreciate you. Just ask yourself if she would do the same for you.

Personally I think its a little overkill. Good ideas though. Maybe just cut back the gifts a little.

What.

The.

Hell.

:trouble:

You are clinically insane. Does this girl even know it's your "anniversary"? Are you going to do something for the "anniversary" of when you guys first started dating? What about the anniversary of the very first time you said "I love you" to her?

You are going crazy on this. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you probably have never dated anybody for this long before. Out of all the things you mentioned (hotel, dinner, necklace, bubble bath, photo album, CD, etc.) any ONE of those would be appropriate. Not all of them. If for no other reason than that you'll be up a damn creek when anniversary #2 rolls around.

I guess I'll just go with the hotel and the necklace. The reason for the hotel for 2 nights is that I moved out of my old apartment. I won't get a new one until august because I'm on the road for work most of the summer and it doesn't make a ton of sense. I paid full price for the first night, but the second night is half price because it's Canada day weekend up here. SHe's really big on romance but...good enough.

How about a bouquet of roses instead of the necklace? It'll be cheaper and will have the same kind of impact, if not more.

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.

And then they'll die.
