The 'funny' part is how Europeans see Americans put high fructose corn syrup in almost every type of food, whereas in the EU that sh!t is not allowed. First thing Americans have to solve is the corruption within the FDA.

100% yes. FDA might as well be a partner with Big Pharma. They literally allow stuff to be added to food that will knowingly cause health issues for people over time(like 6x the amount of calcium needed in the diet) to force people to become dependent on prescription drugs.

And I'm not going to lie, you can see obese people wandering around Amsterdam, but most of them are foreigners, not native Dutch. We ride bicycles and live in apartments without elevators, so you have to move. From what I heard, Americans only move in gyms, but they don't walk/cycle in normal life. Sedentary lifestyle plus high fructose corn syrup = dangerous weight gains.

The reason no one walks in American is because 99% of the country is a surburban car dependant dystopia. Seriously, people think most Americans live in downtown cities, not true, the majority live in sprawling nonplaces ie surburbs. There is literally zero walking in those places except from the parking lot to the store, or soccer moms doing half mile walks in their soulless gated neighborhoods. Walking around busy surburban intersections is pure misery so it's not laziness, but horrible city/street design that is completely designed around cars, pedistrians are an afterthought, if at all. Many places literally do not even have sidewalks.

Amsterdam is a great example of city design because it's designed to maximize walkability and pedestrian/civic life, among many other principles of city design that we completely threw out since WW2. In America, pedistrians are effectively second class citizens everywhere except dense downtown districts.

It's getting better but nowhere near where it needs to be. The bigger issue is what people choose to eat. Nothing is going to help if you choose to eat lots of processed garbage which many people do because they feel they've "earned it" from working out of exercising, not knowing they pretty much just made their workout pointless.

I also eat super clean and stay away from virtually anything processed other than small treats like 85% dark chocolate and dole whip here and there. The vast majority of my diet are one ingredient foods from a 60-70 item list.

Biking in the US is literally asking to take your life in your hands. They have bike lanes in a lot of places now but people could care less about them and pay virtually no attention to them.

Only safe place to bike are on trails or in parks.

The thing is though, if you lived in a place like Amsterdam you might literally walk/bike everywhere, every day. That adds up a lot, and while you cannot out exercise a bad diet, I do think people underestimate how much that can make a difference, it's not just our diet that's the issue.

The root cause of obesity is eating more calories than being burned, all of that is nonsense.

You have a lot to learn. The first part of the statement that is a problem is that you can't even define with any accuracy what a calorie is.

CICO is correct. I listened to this guys lecture about fructose and the biological survival switch. Logically it checks out. He does however not refute calories in calories out. This is more a theory about the mechanisms at work.

The problem with CICO is that if you cannot accurately define something and it changes depending on what state the food is in, how it's absorbed and then about 20 other factors then what you are left with is basically nothing of substance. At BEST you can estimate to within 500 calories on a daily basis. At BEST. If your margin of error is +/- 25% it's a failed system.

This doesn't even get into how different types of food trigger differing hormonal responses(not just insulin), feed different gut bacteria, which then further trigger different metabolic responses, etc.

It's an oversimplistic way of looking at things that only works when you give yourself wide margins to play with and leaves a lot of people frustrated when they can't lose weight even though they are eating calories that "should" allow them to.

Yeah yeah stored energy in the form of fat, whatever, I was a fat fvck, I know what I'm talking about, I did the journey of losing weight natural & enhanced, nobody can fool me, no matter how many "new studies" is being magically discovered. I'm not gonna even argue about this.

That isn't what I am referring to. What I am referring to is that you cannot accurately tell me the calorie content of most foods with any real accuracy. Especially if you are looking at a food label that is allowed to be up to 20% off by the FDA in either direction and considered "accurate".

And that's only the beginning.

Also, losing weight is never the goal...losing fat is the goal, and most people do that very poorly compared to the amount of lean body mass they lose concurrently that they don't need to.

That is true but it still doesn’t change the fact that is CICO. If you eat at deficit, you will lose weight. I agree there are healthy and unhealthy ways to achieve that.

I liked this guys hypothesis and it for sure tracks with the USA obesity explosion. Fructose is too easily available in the food supply and decoupling it from fruit’s natural packaging (with all the vitamins and fiber) has had disastrous consequences for metabolic health.

That is true but it still doesn’t change the fact that is CICO. If you eat at deficit, you will lose weight. I agree there are healthy and unhealthy ways to achieve that.

I agree with that too, the hard part comes from determining what constitutes a deficit more than anything.

The easiest way to achieve that is by eating single ingredient foods where the calorie content is more controlled individually which is also the healthiest way to eat since you are avoiding all of the additives, preservatives, food dyes, and all the other crap they put in packaged foods...

But for people who are not focusing on one ingredient foods and trying to figure out calorie content...good luck.
