Question about organized crime these days.

Back in the day they used to have the Mob and then you had Escobar in the 80s too.

Outside of the theory of the government CIA being the real criminals, I am curious, in these day and age, are criminal organizations like the mob or Escobar's cartel an actual threat in developed countries or are they more of a thing of the past?

I know street gangs exist but those are in poor ghetto neighborhoods.

People mistake organized crime for violent organize criminals.

Those you see collecting money from shops as "protection money" are the the laborers, real organized crime works comfortably from offices buying politicians and judges while getting rich with public money.

They dont need to kill a journalist, they simply make sure no ones publish his articles as much as they dont need to kill cops cause they make sure they get a promotion and are moved somewhere else.

Regarding drug dealers, they get so much money that they can buy huge chunks of clean economy and present themselves as reputable businessmen.
