How difficult is this for someone coming from a skilled occupation?

I am interested in the following cities:

Chicago
NYC
Boston
San Francisco

It's been a while since I dealt with immigration, but the last I checked, anyone can come here for up to six months and stay as a tourist. The only requirement was to leave and re-enter the US every six months. Working here legally is the hard part. You'll need a green card. Getting married to a US citizen is the easiest way.

My experience with immigration was on behalf of my former wife. As far as you being a skilled worker, I doubt our government gives a sh!t. I found them to treat everyone like a Cuban boat person. My wife's uncle is a former Prime Minister of their country, plus she had a Master's degree, immaculate background....did that matter?....nope, no one cares. Get in line with the rest of the boat people, you dirty immigrant. That's how we treat anyone who might actually add value to this country.

Well, that would make sense to do so, if we fast-tracked the educated people who were going to immediately start adding value to society and paying a lot of taxes, which is how immigration helps a country. But the corporate overlords who run everything don't need doctors; they need hotel maids and fruit pickers.

San Francisco and New York City are extremely expensive places to live. If you plan on living alone you'll be paying at least 2,000 dollars a month for a 1 bedroom apartment.

This is right. I live 2 hours from downtown Chicago and visit there my fair share. In all honestly I think Chicago is a decent place. I have never been to Boston or SF, and I'm not a big fan of NYC. I would live either in the West/Northwest burbs or right downtown Chicago. There are some areas to avoid like the South side, bad bad crime. Most folks in Chicago mind their own business but will reasonably reach out to help if someone needs.

That being said, in your decision you should also set goals for what you are coming to America for? What career? What entertainment? What weather can you tolerate? NYC, LA, and Chicago are America's three biggest cities, in that order. There are other ones that aren't top three but still nice. Indianapolis and Minneapolis come to mind, both great places IMO. Also Miami is you want it sunny year round. I was in all 3 of these cities within the past several months and I think they are all decent. Each would have their pros and cons, and things to offer and things they do not. If I were moving to America from a foreign land I would avoid Detroit and LA and give the others a look, and probably pick Chicago in the end.

Unless you're a brown refugee, you'll have to get in line like everybody else. Average wait time for a green card is 8 years.

^ Prior to this thread and the referendum I had already secured an interview with a partner in the NYC office of my firm for a 2 year secondment with the potential for a permanent transfer but thanks for the advice cupcake.
