Two words; hydrogen BOMB
Hydrogen is used to start the nuclear reaction because it's just a proton once you strip the electron from it.

You launch that proton into the core and BOOM goes the nuclear chain reaction. For non-nuclear uses, hydrogen is pretty crap. It's used more as an energy storage device.

Now as far as air to gasoline conversion. It sounds nice if you want to be dependant on liquid fuels and it's pretty inefficient. What makes more sense is pouring more money and man power into designing proper batteries and battery technology and improving solar efficiency. Our planet is being bombarded with FREE energy from the sun. Why not make use of it and store it and use it?

Your roof is being bombarded with FREE energy. The roads, parking lots, skyscraper roofs could be collecting that energy and storing it for us to use. And there is so much space available. Instead we're wasting 1000W per square meter of free energy from the sun and burning fossil fuels and polluting our own air until we can't breathe.

We're completely retarded.

Because powerful forces including oil companies and banks can control the entire planet by making sure we stay dependent on fossil fuels

solar energy is not containable...it would be a one time only fee for panels and batteries...then the energy is free.....even printer companies know enough not to do this  ....they give the printer free...then we pay for ink for a lifetime...that is how energy companies want it...that we pay and pay and pay till we die

99.9% percent of people don't want this...but they are powerless to stop the .01% of the elite who control the grant money for scientific research, the scientists, the oil companies, and the banks....any tech they don't like is squashed.

Not too long ago one of the big shots from the oil company appeared on the Jon Stewart show. To send a message to the next generation. We are responsible for finding ways of alternate fuel for the future. As a populace we have to figure out ways to contribute. You can do it in small ways like getting a bike. All I know if this older gentleman appeared on a show like that it was to tell the rest of us that can think to help out in what little ways we can. Oil will eventually run out, there's no use to throw fancy words in there. It's as simple as that. It's up to us to figure out where to go into the next century.

The type of nuclear reaction from fusing hydrogen is not the same as that of using heavy uranium/ thorium. Second, neutrons not protons typically are the catalysts for most types of fissions. Third, creating energy via fusion is complicated as current technologies use the energy from several nuclear explosions to actually cause the fusion reaction. Its not a chain reaction - its a prompt critical reaction whereas the fission you see in commercial plans its a sustained reaction.

Nature is probably the most efficient engine for converting sun energy into useful energy, and the best plant life is maybe 10% efficient. What people seem to forget is that one needs to factor in time which is why we can't just create oil out of thin air. These long term transient conditions are needed in addition to having the feedstock. It take energy to create energy so when you include entropy ( irreversible losses), you have a zero sum game wherein "creating energy" actually consumes energy.
