For the experts out there..

What is the best type of gambling for someone patient and disciplined looking to build up some extra cash. Gambling that involves some skill/instinct/technique rather than just plain fun/luck. Because i know there are some good options like Forex and commodities (if you can call that gambling). But i'm thinking something more of a conventional sense to match a fairly low budget.

Share some ideas....

Thanks.

I will have my Empire soon enough, but that will wait, for as of now i lack the funds, mobility and inspiration.

In that case get a job that teaches you something, use what funds you have to buy a bunch of books, and search for some inspiration. If you don't do this now, then when you decide its time to build your Empire you'll still be in the same spot, and kicking yourself for wasting all that time taking the easy road. Playing for the short term is what kills dreams, and no man is rich enough to buy back his past. I wouldn't advise trying to becoming a hustler unless you take it as seriously as any other professional treats their line of work.

Some form of poker. Unless you know how to count cards and can find a casino with single deck blackjack.

You could learn how to bet on horses too, but I imagine you don't have the time or patients for the research involved in that.

Sit N Go-- Single Table Tournament Poker--

This form of poker is PURE math and game theory, but realize that poker isn't for people that want to make an EASY living. The best players that I know of spend more time studying than playing, and that is what I plan on doing for the next month.

Learn ICM and proper push/ fold strategy.

Poker is the wrong answer although close. The most lucrative type of betting is sports betting. The 2nd most lucrative is poker.

There's this company that takes on investors much like a stock broker would, but instead of investing your money in stocks they bet NBA basketball. The minimum investment is 10k, and from what I've read most people realize a profit.

I would love to learn how to bet sports.. off to te 2+2 sports betting forum...

Here is what Mark Cuban has to say about sports betting vs wallstreet:

Yeah unfortunately I dont know of a place such as 2+2 that could teach you to bet on sports. I guess its like any other thing. You have to learn by losing a small fortune. It took me 8 years to play poker "professionally" and even now its still a very hard living. Im going back to school because I dont want to have to rely on 70 hours a week of poker to live. Its been 1.5 years since i quit my 40 a week hour job and started playing poker for a living. Im already having...I dont know how to describe it but, lets just say physical and mental problems that related from the stress and long hours.

Ive been telling people on these boards for over a year. I dont recommend poker to anyone looking for extra income.

Skel, aren't you a fixed limit player??? I swear that the NL guys have it so much easier than trying to grind out some dough playing FL.

I started as a NL holdem player and quickly found that playing fixed limit was easier for the "system" players. By that I mean the players that play the odds and dont really play the other players as much as you are use to seeing on TV or in the movies. Those being the players that bluff at 100k dollar pots with nothing or as I call them, actors.

Anways fixed limit is mind numbingly boring and I found another way to grind which wasnt so boring. I started playing the Omaha Hi low games. I realized that only the players who truly knew what they were doing could win there and you reall, really have to know your odds and outs to be a successful omaha player. Not only that but Omaha at the time had the only limits that were 75/150. At present time I play a bit of everything depending on whos playing and where.

I find NL and Limit to both be challenging in their own way. I couldnt say who has it harder.

lucrative for who? I would have thought something that takes more skill than luck would be a better option than sports. I don't see how anyone can make steadier money with sports than with poker. Unless your playing horses maybe.. i don't know.

Gambling and investment are two ends of the same thing. The less skill the worse the chance of a return. You don't have enough for stocks, I assume.
Otherwise that is my suggestion. You may not get rich quick, but you might get rich slow.

There is the old joke "You can make a small fortune out of the futures market, only trouble is you have to start with a large fortune."

I opened a futures account in the 80s. I never had the guts to trade it. Eventually, they made me close it because I didn't trade it. But you know what, those bastards had my money in the short term money market and they were making me about 20% per annum on my account, which they credited to it. So, with that kind of return, you were better off just leaving your money in your account and not trading. Ironic yes?

Well obviously best for the people that know sports really well. I really dont know much about sports betting but this is what I have been told by people in the gambling profession. I have no facts to back it up though so take my comment with a grain of salt.
