I think you did the right thing. To defend someone when they need help is the right way in my opinion. It may not be always rational, but who said being rational all the time is right. We don't have emotions for nothing, sometimes we should also follow and do what we feel is right.
Although I also criticize your behavior; you attacked the guy because, you felt defending the girl was right AND you broke up with your girl. The second one is not a valid reason to physically harm someone.

There's nothing wrong with someone intervening when they see an assault taking place. Ultimately, that's what this was...a crime. If it were the woman hitting the guy instead, that would be a crime, too and intervening to stop it would have been okay, too.

The problem is that he started swinging before trying to talk...and THAT was where he made a mistake.

A woman in my area was shot to death by a crazy ex-boyfriend.
My state makes it bloody difficult/cumbersome to get a handgun for protection, and of course, begging the police for help never helps abused women either.
Right around the time of her killing many, many state troopers were just standing around, eating donuts and shooting the breeze protecting an *amateur* golf tournament on *private* property. Not that Tiger Woods or Chi Chi Rodgriguez deserve a publicly funded security detail either, but we're not talking about a major event here.

Nishbuk I saw this thread and had to take a look. I WAS probably the biggest AFC because I wanted to be that knight in shining armor so bad. I wanted to rescue a girl from all the other scum bags out there. So when I say this, me being a big softy hopefully you will take it to heart. Alot of people say what if she always gets beat by the same guy and doesn't leave, what if she was asking for it, what if, what if, what if! There is absolutely no excuse to ever hit a women unless her ass is physically trying to kill you. You did the right thing Nishbuk. In fact a guy hitting a girl enrages me sooo much that I walk around hoping another guy will hit a girl in front of me. Just so I can beat the fvcking life out of this guy.
