I have depression and social anxiety. Just looked up the symptoms and I have these ones

continuous low mood or sadness,
feelings of hopelessness and helplessness,
low self-esteem,
tearfulness,
feelings of guilt,
feeling irritable and intolerant of others,
lack of motivation and little interest in things,
difficulty making decisions,
lack of enjoyment,
suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming someone else,
feeling anxious or worried,
slowed movement or speech,
change in appetite or weight (usually decreased, but sometimes increased),
constipation,
unexplained aches and pains,
lack of energy
disturbed sleep patterns (for example, problems going to sleep or waking in the early hours of the morning)
not performing well at work,
taking part in fewer social activities and avoiding contact with friends,
reduced hobbies and interests, and
difficulties in home and family life.

Another symptom is losing your sex drive, but Ive never had sex so that doesn't apply to me

I'm gonna go to the doctors so he can give me something for it. Anyone else got any help of dealing with it?

The worst feeling I get is a daily sense of crippling loneliness the moment I go to bed. I spend most nights crying...

Bring on the humour..

You can still have a sex drive without having had sex. It is merely how horny you are, so I guess related to how often you masturbate. Also note that a lot of anti-depressants reduce sex drive as well.

Definitely see a doctor and explain all your symptoms, if he is any good he will refer you to a psychologist or at least a councellor too. I personally have found councellors a bit useless, but everyone has a different experience with them.

I find the best ways to overcome this is exercise and distracting yourself by spending lots of time with friends or even watching comedy. Whatever distracts your mind. Now I know that is easier said than done, when you are down and have low energy exercise or socialising is the last thing you feel like doing, and you already admit you are alienating your friends. It really is a matter of will power and forcing yourself. You get an invite to something, you sit there and come up with excuses not to go, you think you can't be bothered, then say to yourself 'f*ck it! I'm going' and reply with a yes. Trust me, thats the hard part but once you actually get out there you almost always feel better.

When you are feeling particularly down and have that deep burning feeling in your chest, find an exercise that is really quick to exhaust you (otherwise you will get bored of it) and works you hard. It should go for no longer than 30-60 seconds. At the end of a furious workout where you have pushed the reps until you can do no more, you will feel better, I know from experience. My exercise is chinups, I just keep doing them until I can no longer pull myself up and feel much better. Push ups will also work, or lifting weights but remember you will need it fairly heavy depending on your strength because you don't want to go more than 10-15 reps if you can.

I hope this helps. Don't feel ashamed, lots of people go through this.

Sounds more like a under active thyroid problem to me... Ask the doc if that is the problem.

Shit, they have similar symptoms to depression. Now I'm really scared what's wrong with me.

What the hell dude?

EVERYONE HAS THOSE FVCKING "SYMPTOMS" ONE TIME OR ANOTHER IN THEIR LIFE.

FVCK MAN.

I mean... tearfulness? Feelings of guilt? conspitation? Feeling irritable of others (aka stupid fvcks that make up the rest of the world)?

COME THE FVCK ON WHO DOESN'T HAVE THAT.

Dude, I sometimes feel suuuuuuper sh1tty, and I look up wikipedia "depression" or "bipolar" and I start feeling sorry for myself matching nearly all of those "symptoms."

Then I take a huge breath, look around me, see that I have a house, family that cares, computer, internet, a few key people that matter, good status and progress in my life, oh and a pair of fvcking BALLS and I think "ok man you're not a goddam tight jeans wearing emo kid. MAN UP"

So then you know what happens? Then I laugh at myself, then I laugh at the losers like you that SERIOUSLY think there's something wrong with yourself.

I would say I am a misanthrope and maybe you are too. At first, it's lonely and feel depressed and hopeless that everyone is just so fvcking stupid and useless. But then you become apathetic and see it as a big joke. Don't worry about it man, go on youtube and watch some videos of people doing stupid sh1t. Or just something else that makes you happy. Surely something makes you happy?

As for your doc, he will probably give you prozac or some sh1t...some say the meds just get you in deeper but I'm not a doc so I wouldn't know about that.

I'd say I've had it every night for around 12 months...

You need to find some kind of hobby you enjoy, and stick to it.

I'd say learn an instrument or something, if you haven't already?

I don't want to sound more like a hollow individual who can't experience any emotion, but I haven't 'enjoyed' anything for years, I just get on with stuff

Yeah, so just do it and enjoy it.

I think it's you not wanting to enjoy anything that is the cause of all this.

It's basically like a wall you don't want to climb over.

A part of you must since you posted this up here, but with posts about just "getting on with stuff", makes me wonder.

Just do it, and enjoy it bro.

Learn how to play the guitar, pull it out sometime at an open mic night or something and start belting some tunes out man.

I didn't learn guitar to play for other people. I did it so I can play stuff in my spare time

I use to enjoy it yeah, but I don't anymore. Haven't touched it for weeks.

Yeah well whatever floats your boat, pick it back up and get into it man.

Not sure where you live, but if you're able to walk across the road to the beach and start playing some stuff go ahead man.

Maybe find someone you can jam with?

I know how you feel man, I've been suffering from depression for awhile now. That's part of the reason I don't want to go out anymore and want to give up this pick-up stuff for awhile. I know I won't see any improvement til I can get to the root cause.

You live in England? No wonder you're depressed! Just kidding :p

Look, you got a lot of anger deep down inside of you. Been there all your life... You never let it out because you're somehow convinced that it's wrong, perhaps you're afraid you won't be able to control yourself once you let it out or you'll feel like you aren't "yourself" anymore when you let it out...

Anyway, it needs to get out in order for you to get well. It's time to let it out! Be mad, be REAL mad! So this is what you do: You start working out in the gym regularly but you make sure before each workout, that your anger is coming out, not a little but all of it, no holding back! And don't care if you look like a psychopath while working out (Serge Nubret admitted that people were often afraid of him while he was working out coz he looked like a psychopath during his workouts. Also, watch "blood and guts" from Dorian Yates...that'll teach you to stop caring about what others think of you while you work out).

Also, watch ALL the Rocky movies (not just Rocky IV coz everybody says it's the best)

First, I would suggest going to the doctor, but I would not suggest taking any drugs that they suggest. They hand that sh!t out like candy and it f*cks with your head. I would only suggest that in the most serious circumstances (i.e. if you've seriously contemplated suicide - to the extent where you had the knife in your hand and were about to slit your wrists - or if you've already attempted it and are in danger of attempting it again) and only in those circumstances as a temporary measure.

There are biological issues that cause depression, but these are much less common than is commonly claimed (similar to how ADD is mishandled).

With that being said, you've got some serious emotional issues that you need to address. One thing I've learned is that time does not heal all wounds; that is only true in the case that you have the capabilities to process your emotions and if you actively do so. In many cases this doesn't happen, and you retain all of that bad energy indefinitely, and when you retain bad energy it grows.

So you need to figure out what emotional baggage you're carrying and how to deal with it. If you can't do this on your own then you need to go see a counselor.

OK. How in the world does depression cause constipation? Or is that the anxiety? What the hell does pooping have to do with any of this?

Everyone gets depressed; you simply have to find enjoyment somewhere in life. For example, I am still laughing at the idea of being too depressed to poop. That is some funny stuff!
