Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' pretty much got it right. A consumerist dystopia where the citizens enjoy recreational sex and the drug of Soma. Yet we have gone one step further in combining these two pastimes in the delivery of high speed pornography at the click of a button. This community is probably a bit of a niche one... the exception to the norm. I'd say western 'post-developed' societies are going the way of Japan, where half the population in their thirties are sexless:
The way I understand it is that we have seen the collapse of a 'romantic culture'. It is now dead and dissected - on the one hand you have a very rational view of the world, which scoffs at romance, and on the other a very biological, dare I say, a bestial one. Our personalities have been dichotomized, and our bodies alienated from our minds. Romance served to combine the two. And romance transcended the relation between the sexes... it was near something of a worldview.
Sex stripped of romance is really just bestiality, and this is what pornography is all about.
