Human beings are programmed with an invisible achievement board inside each of thier minds. This is a very primal thing and I'm sure it dates back to cavemen and exists in other animals. The goal of ones life is to fill these boards with personal achievements one can be proud of and draw confidence from.
Personal achievements can be anything the individual values in various categories. These imaginary badges and awards are very important to one's self esteem. They can range from absolutely anything, as long as the individual truly believes there is value to be had in that area.
I. Personal achivements.
1.) Physical appearance - Perhaps the most obvious, but important none the less. One cannot change genetics and realistically, even plastic surgery is quite limited. You are stuck with your face, your hair, your skin, what have you. What you are not stuck with is the muscular composition. One can and should derive a feeling of personal success by putting in the effort and sculpting the body to an attractive state. Women are able to draw from this area much more than men are, for obvious reasons. This is also the reason why is it extremely common for a woman's only hobby to be making herself look better. Extremely attractive women are given a ridiculous amount of positives for this and it is not uncommon that this is the only area in their lives they will ever have to draw from to have personal confidence. (Think about it, there is a reason why really hot girls are usually *****y and never bother to learn any skills other than doing their hair and makeup and come-off extremely dumb.)
2.) Intelligence - Knowing that you are smarter than those around you can give you quite a boost in self esteem. Intelligence in the more basic areas, such as command of the English language, is an extremely important 'achievement badge'. If having proper diction can give one personal satisfaction, imagine what building a robot from your grandma's old lawnmower could do! Drawing from any area of intelligence will help a person's self esteem a ton. Read a book once in awhile, there really are book for everybody (personally i love fantasy novels.)
3.) Money - Like you've heard before, money doesn't matter in the least and your goal should not be to amass it. What does matter is having enough of it to fuel your life's dreams and personal achievements. You do not need a 30,000 Harley Davidson motorcycle to feel good about yourself, but if you have a true passion for motorcycles, you do need enough money to own a bike that suits your needs. (Don't you love the idiots that just start a hobby like this and pour all their money into something so high-end they wouldn't even be able to appreciate it due to lack of experience?) Living extremely modestly, like say the life of a monk can be very enriching and even add to your invisible achievement chart. Also your way of making money (your job) should be something you're very proud to be doing.
4.) Discipline - Mastering one, or many skills. Try many things. It will really help you to be a complete person. You want to be an artist? Discipline yourself to spend at least four hours a day improving your abilities to paint or what have you. Discipline is perhaps the most important thing one can learn. I wish our western culture didn't encourage shortcuts and all that nonsense. Look towards martial arts and Asian philosophy for discipline, it will drastically improve your life. If you have enough discipline you can do anything and if you have the knowledge that you are able to accomplish anything, you will obtain monster confidence.
5.) Social skills - Another area to draw confidence from is socialization. You can be the dumbest redneck on the face of the earth, but if you know how to make people feel good by interacting with them naturally, you will go extremely far in life. Friends are important, having people to share things with and relate to is absolutely invaluable. Keeping friends and having high-quality ones relate directly towards your social skills. Imagine that your social skills were so awesome that you were able to walk up to a band after a concert and wind up having a drink with them. Surely that would make a lasting impression to your confidence. Social skills are also important because they are how you get women. Force yourself to socialize and practice, social confidence translates directly back to deep inner confidence. Practice makes perfect here, just like anything else in life.
The cure to depression, being a loser, and being a worthless human being is to work on one or all of these areas. It seems obvious after reading it that this is the basic principle that the human world is based upon, but if you are like me, nobody has ever spelled it out for you. I went through probably the first 20 or so years of my life in a walking daze simply because I had no idea why i should work for things. Everything seemed empty and pointless. It is only recently in the past couple of years that I've discovered that feeling good about yourself takes actual work, but the good part about it is.. well there are infinite number of ways to go about it.
If you think hard enough, literally every action a person takes in any given circumstance is driven from the desire to elevate ones own personal, imaginary status.
Man lies to a woman at a bar about what he does for a living - elevates his status in her eyes and if he is able to win her attention his self esteem will increase
You can think of more examples if you try.
